"A Lesson for Fathers"
Message summary: Today we exhort, encourage and charge each of you to walk in a manner worthy of God.
 Listen to this message on your audio player."For you know how, like a father with his children, we exhorted each one of you and encouraged you and charged you to walk in a manner worthy of God, who calls you into His own kingdom and glory" (1 Thessalonians 2:11,12).
 We pass an Amish farm stand on the main road leading into Mount Joy from Lancaster. Soon we expect to see piles of locally grown corn on the cob freshly picked from the
fields. Just writing about it makes my mouth water for sweet, juicy roasted corn on the cob that sometimes dribbles milk down my chin. We're in the best part of summer when we add a freshly sliced tomato from the garden and cold seedless watermelon to finish off our meal. I'm reminded of a corn on the cob memory from childhood taught by my grandpa. PaPa showed us how to eat the corn kernels off the cob and then go back and suck out the sweet, starchy corn milk from the cob. Actually I still recall the slurping sound he made!
Although this illustration may be a bit corny, in a sense it's that way as we study God's Word. The corn kernels are what is most obvious in our study but so often we can extract more tender truth milk from the passage. On Friday I used the daily text in regard to a Father's Day message titled, "An Exhortation For Fathers" and focused on the charge of Paul to the Thessalonians "to walk in a manner worthy of
God" which is an excellent description of what a father should be teaching and modeling for his children.
Over the weekend I have continued to muse on this verse, sort of like sucking more flavorful juice out of a corn cob. "For you know how, like a father with his children" which presumes the readers had a healthy view of human fatherhood. This is something Paul was confident they indeed knew and had experienced; the way a father should instruct and interact with his children then and also in our own day.
And what is that? They exhort, encourage and charge.
These words are certainly similar but have some distinctions as well. For those of you who like to study deeper I suggest this online commentary compendium which I used in preparation for this message.
This appeal carries three elements according to the need. One commentary makes these distinctions in purpose:
Today godly men will follow Paul's example in regard to their own children and grandchildren. I have been speaking with a father who is seeking counsel in regard to his teenage son who recently encountered online pornography. This father is taking his mentoring role very seriously and shared how he was reading "Every Man's Battle", a book on this topic, so that he can share it with his son. His ultimate goal is that his
son rejects the wiles of Satan and walks in a manner worthy of God.
Today we exhort, encourage and charge each of you to walk in a manner worthy of God.

prayer: Father, we are all like lambs who need a shepherd. How thankful we are for the Great Shepherd of our souls who set an example for us of how to tenderly care for our own. We pray for fathers to come alongside their children to earnestly exhort them to live in a manner that pleases You. We pray that they will encourage or uplift their child who is weak or struggling. We also pray that fathers will issue a
challenge to the child who is wavering in their faith to become strong and resolute, providing for them not only the charge but also the example of what it looks like to be a stouthearted man of faith. In Jesus name we pray. Amen.Today's Suggested Music and Supplemental Resources
"Still" Video Greater Vision
 We had a beautiful day yesterday and celebrated Father's Day eating two of my favorite foods with my favorite people: beef brisket and pecan pie. Sadie is like a vacuum cleaner picking up any crumbs that come her way.  Brisket on the Weber grill (after cooking in slow cooker for many hours to tenderize). Not only was this tasty beef a treat for us, but Sadie and Mollie were especially pleased with the big slab of fat Brooksyne sliced from the brisket. They will enjoy their brisket fat over the next few days.
 Last evening, before Brooksyne left for a walk with the dogs, I reminded her that we are now going to see the daylight begin to shorten since the first day of summer has the longest daylight of the year. Since summer is Brooksyne's favorite season this reminder did not bring a smile to her face. She took a photo of our house when she returned after her long walk to remind herself of how light it still is at 9 pm on June 21st!
Finally today:  Today we received a mystery encouragement in the mail!
