Mennonite farm in Lancaster County
Yesterday Ester and I traveled to the Shady Maple for her "free" birthday meal and passed this large farm spread near East Earl, PA.

"The Strength Of My Life"

Message summary: Receive the daily promise that God's strength is absolutely  adequate to meet your every need!

Listen to our message on your audio player.

"Be strong and courageous" (Joshua 1:6). "Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power" (Ephesians 6:10). "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me" (Philippians 4:13).

Pastor Ed Underwood in his book "When God Breaks Your Heart" wrote about his battle with malevolent lymphoma, a form of cancer that  leads to more suicides than any other form according to oncologists. It can produce intense pain and unbearable itching that can push the senses and the psyche to the limit. He writes:

"My unique pain centers on the flaming, all-consuming irritation of my skin. The agony was excruciating. First the heat, then the insane itching, finally the weakness as my body began shaking from the effect of exfoliating skin."

Living in such painful circumstances is an enormous challenge. He writes, "Falling back on some of my favorite verses from Scripture, or the most comforting truths about the personal relationship with the Lord Jesus I entered into as a young man, I repeat the verse or truth over and over again. I always begin with Philippians 4:13, 'I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.' Then I discipline my mind to say this over and over again with the emphasis on a different word each time."

I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.
I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

The first daily Scripture provides a word of assurance from the Lord to Joshua as he assumed leadership from Moses: "Be strong and courageous". This phrase is repeated three times in verses 6-9 for emphasis. Both strength and courage were greatly needed by Joshua for the monumental task at hand.

Can you just imagine following a spiritual giant like Moses who had led God's people from captivity through the Red Sea and was instrumental in God performing so many other mighty miracles! In the flesh Joshua surely felt overwhelmed and inadequate, as would each of us. And even now we can identify with this need today as we face many challenges. We all need God's strength!

The second daily Scripture is a word from the Apostle Paul written initially to the Ephesian believers:  "Be strong in the Lord and in His mighty power". All God's children can receive this call. So many issues can weaken us. It may be personal struggles such as illness, family problems, a work situation or a pesky neighbor*. It may be the wearing down we experience as we see the times becoming ever more perilous as predicted in Scripture (2 Timothy 3:1). That's the emotion I may feel as I read the news. However, for other believers it may be an actual present persecution for their faith.

But the part of the verse so operative is the phrase "in the Lord". He is the source of our strength! Inspired by the Holy Spirit, Paul reminds us that the strength we rely on is insufficient from within ourselves but is all-sufficient from the Lord "and His mighty power".  Many of you have written to us and shared of the tremendous challenges you are facing in life. Please receive the daily promise that God's strength is absolutely adequate to meet your every need!

Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13

Praying man Daily prayer: Father, You are my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? You are the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid? Strength and courage are given to me because I anchor my hope in You, therefore, I am not afraid for You are with me. I am not discouraged since You will strengthen and help me. You have not given me a spirit of fear, but of power and love and of a sound mind. I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Amen.

Prayer based on Scriptures: Psalm 27:1, Psalm 31:24, 2 Timothy 1:7, Isaiah 41:10, Philippians 4:13

* Brooksyne's Note about a "pesky neighbor":  This is a story covered 11 years ago by our local television station about a lawn on Roseville Rd. in Manheim Township (near Lancaster City) that is filled with offensive sights. I only discovered it in my travels about a year ago and could hardly believe the signs displayed with profanity and many offensive poses of the adult size models that cluttered the large yard. It is located in a beautiful neighborhood with stately mature trees. I tried to imagine myself living next door to this neighbor and having to see that sight everyday when I go to the mailbox or take a walk or just pulling into our driveway. Imagine inviting friends over to your house for dinner! If you explore the link you'll see in part what I am speaking of, but that was covered many years ago and there is far more displays that what is seen in the photos. The owner claims to be an artist and has a right to free expression.

"There's Just Something About That Name"   Watch on YouTube  Yesterday we shared a message about how we are the "fragrance of Christ" and consider a couple of song we recalled that had a fragrance theme. Mark is an IT director we worked with many years ago and he reminded us of this song which has the line, "like the fragrance after the rain".

We had an application of a very foul odor on the fields across the road from us yesterday! Several times a year we have organic fertilizer, AKA manure, spread on the fields.

When God Breaks Your Heart: Choosing Hope in the Midst of Faith-Shattering Circumstances

Birthday meal at Shady Maple
Yesterday was Ester's birthday and she wanted to go to The Shady Maple for her free birthday meal (free as long as someone pays for their own meal, me). Since Brooksyne was volunteering at our local Gift & Thrift store it was just the two of us. We could say these balloons were for Ester but actually the Shady Maple is also celebrating its 41st birthday.

Mennonite biker
For many years we were in this part of Lancaster County each week for a company visit. Yesterday we were reminded about a branch of Mennonites that use bikes to travel about, from the young to the very old.

Rosie and rejected lamb
Several weeks ago we wrote about a rejected lamb, one of triplets that was rejected by his mother. The family has been caring for him and he is doing well and is quite gregarious. Yesterday I rode my bike over for a visit and tried to take a photo of the lamb with Rosie (our maltipoo that looks like a lamb) but she got all shy on me. We'll try again when Brooksyne is with me.
