summary:
Today each of
us who have
placed our
faith in
Christ are
running the
race. Some of
us are just
beginning,
others have
been on the
journey for a
while and
still others
know the time
of departure
is near. But
"it's not over
'til it's
over". Let us
all with
renewed
determination
commit to
faithfully
serving our
Lord and
finishing
well!

"I
have finished
the race" (2
Timothy 4:7).
Here
in the PA
Dutch region
of
Pennsylvania
we have an
interesting
shopping
choice of
various
farmer's
markets that
are usually
open one or
two days a
week. Farmers'
markets may be
indoors or
outdoors and
typically
consist of
booths, tables
or stands
where farmers
sell their
produce, live
animals and
plants,
prepared foods
and beverages.
There are also
stands that
sell misc
items like the
Leesport
Farmers Market
that sells
overstock and
damaged
products from
Staples that
the owner buys
by the pallet
load. We paid
$5.00 for an
item that
costs over
$50.00 online
when we
visited on
Wednesday!
In
Lancaster City
Central Market
is the oldest
Farmer's
Market in
America
established in
1730.
Rick
Strickler, a
friend from
our Sunday
School (ABF)
class, has
reached a
significant
milestone, as
t
his
week he is
retiring.
He
has worked
continuously
at
market-stands
since he was a
young teen.
His wife
writes, "He
has truly had
an
unbelievable
work ethic for
the last 56
years - 45
years in
business for
himself".
We
wanted to
visit him one
last time at
his
delicatessen
stand so we
drove over to
the Leesport
Farmer's
Market on
Wednesday
afternoon.
Rick is an
amiable man
that many
customers will
miss seeing
weekly. He
will however
stay on for a
period to help
the new owner
in the
transition. Rick demonstrates a great character quality, finishing well.
Throughout
life we will
have numerous
finishes. A
very early
accomplishment
is finishing
kindergarten.
Not true for
us but now
they even have
kindergarten
graduations!
Finishing
well
in
retirement
,
like Rick, is
a great
accomplishment.
Most have had
some
overcomings,
some very
significant,
but they kept
plodding
on.
But
we all
have a future
most definite
finish. The
apostle Paul
writes about
this in his
final written
words recorded
in 2 Timothy
4. In this
passage Paul
knew the time
of his
departure
(death) was
imminent and
he lists three
retrospective
assurances he
had as he
looked back on
his
life:
1)
"I have fought
the good
fight."
2) "I have finished the race." 3) "I have kept the faith."
Today
each of us who
have placed
our faith in
Christ are
running the
race. Some of
us are just
beginning,
others have
been on the
journey for a
while and
still others
know their
time of
departure is
near. Let us
all with
renewed
determination
commit to
faithfully
serving our
Lord and
finishing
well!We will finish this race, but the question is, "Will we finish well?"
Finish
well, every
day that we
are given
Finish well, for the glory of His name Finish strong, until the Savior finally calls us home Give it everything we have, finish well.

Stephen's
note: In
considering
our friend
Rick finishing
well I
consider
various
finishes in my
own life. I am
pleased that
we departed
well in both
of the
churches I
served as
pastor over a
25 year
period. We
still have
associations
with
parishioners
in those
churches and
have been
invited back
to each church
to
speak.
We had a peak
of 12
companies we
served as
chaplains but
as we have
phased into
retirement we
have scaled
back to
just
the three
present
companies we
still
serve.
We have left
each company
well and still
make periodic
visits as we
have an
association
with the
owners and
many of the
employees. In
fact just
yesterday we
had a phone
call with a
previous
owner.
But
in musing over
this I
consider at
least one poor
finish in my
life. In
college I
worked for a
propane
delivery
company
driving a
bobtail truck
to deliver
propane. One
summer George
Bush, the
owner, asked
me to paint
three huge
bulk propane
tanks. It was
very hot and I
didn't apply
myself well. I
especially
have never
liked to do
the prep work
needed for a
good paint job
and these
tanks needed a
lot of that.
My bad
attitude
affected my
work skill and
I still
remember that
I did a poor
paint job on
the propane
tanks. But I can look at my Social Security statement and see my earnings record beginning with the $640 I earned in 1971 from my first job at Kroger (I shared about that job in yesterday's message).
