Calls" Note:
Last
week we were
traveling in
New England
and did not
post messages.
We are home
now and so we
resume!
Tomorrow is
the 29th
anniversary of
this ministry
and also
Brooksyne's
birthday! Message summary: Wisdom is knowledge applied to the reality of life. You can have knowledge without wisdom. But you can’t have wisdom without knowledge.

“Does
not wisdom
call out? Does
not
understanding
raise her
voice?”
(Proverbs
8:1). "The
fear of the
Lord is the
beginning of
wisdom, and
the knowledge
of the Holy
One is
insight"
(Proverbs
9:10). Oh, the
depth of the
riches and
wisdom and
knowledge of
God!" (Romans
11:33). Our church is in a series from the book of Proverbs using an interesting format with Sunday School lessons coordinated with the sermon each week. Yesterday I taught a lesson to our Crossroads Adult Bible Fellowship class based on Proverbs 8 which presents wisdom as a lady calling out. There are many voices calling out claiming to dispense wisdom but so many voices utter foolishness. It takes discernment and spiritual discipline to hear the voice of truth. Proverbs 8 invites us to pursue wisdom with urgency and love. It’s not just about knowledge (there's a lot of that), but true wisdom is about aligning with God’s design for our life. Wisdom is presented as a personified voice, a woman calling out to humanity, offering insight, truth, and understanding. It contrasts wisdom with folly (as seen in the previous chapters) and shows wisdom as eternal, noble, and aligned with God's purposes. J.I. Packer in his classic book “Knowing God” writes "Wisdom is the power to see and the inclination to choose the best and highest goal, together with the surest means of attaining it." Wisdom is knowledge applied to the reality of life. You can have knowledge without wisdom. But you can’t have wisdom without knowledge.
Wisdom
is not hidden
or elusive.
She stands in
public places,
on the
heights,
beside the
way, at the
crossroads -
calling out to
all people,
especially the
simple and
foolish
(ultimately
all of us),
inviting us to
learn and
grow. But will
we listen, and
just as
important, if
wisdom
requires
certain
actions from
us will we opt
to walk in the
narrow path of
wisdom's
insight or
tread the
broad path of
foolishness?
The
apostle James
writes, "But
the wisdom
from above is
first pure,
then
peaceable,
gentle, open
to reason,
full of mercy
and good
fruits,
impartial and
sincere"
(3:17). May
God give us
all a heart to
hear and
properly
respond to
this "wisdom
from above"!

Today's Suggested Music and Supplemental Resources
"Christ Our Wisdom" Watch on YouTube This is from our service yesterday at Calvary Church here in Lancaster County PA. This song has very thoughtful lyrics and our messages the remainder of this week will be based on lines that especially grip our heart. Brooksyne's note: The soloist leading in the song, "Christ Our Wisdom", is 18 year old Olivia. She grew up on Long Island where her mother and father were active in music all her childhood - both vocal and instrumental. About three years ago they moved to Lancaster and she is now a freshman at Lancaster Bible College. Olivia told me it was easy to adjust since she was home schooled all her school years and didn't have to adjust to a new school. She has a delightful personality and her love for the Lord was evident all through our conversation yesterday.
If
you watch any
of our choir
videos you'll
see that most
of the singers
are seniors,
some who have
sung in the
choir for 40
years or more.
I'm always
pleased when
we have
younger ones
join the choir
or for the
many young
people who are
leading in our
worship teams
at the church
such as
Olivia.
Last week
we traveled up
to New England
to see the
fall foliage.
We visited a
number of
sites and rode
several bike
trails. All
this week we
will share
photos from
our trip.
We
took our first
bike ride on
our way up to
New England on
a portion of
the Hudson
Valley Rail
Trail in NY.

We
rode our bikes
across the
Walkway over
the Hudson
near
Poughkeepsie
NY. This
claims to be
the longest
elevated
pedestrian
bridge in the
world. The
total length
is 6,768 feet
(2,063 m),
including
approaches,
and the top of
the deck is
212 feet (65
m) above
water. It is
an abandoned
rail road
bridge opened
in 1888. It
was a very
cold and
blustery day
which for
Brooksyne was
a challenge,
since she does
not respond
well to cold,
windy weather,
but I sure did
enjoy
it!

Traveling
up through
eastern New
York we came
across this
town and the
welcome sign
sure caught
our attention.
Of course it's
interesting to
me seeing my
name on a
state sign.
There's surely
a lot of other
unique town
names but this
is the first
time I ever
recall seeing
in bold caps,
"the
only (name of
town) on
earth!"

Driving
through a
little village
in upstate New
York this very
aged and
rustic tow
truck caught
our attention.
Notice the
rusted milk
can on the
step up to the
cab and the
speed limit
sign. Looks
like this
truck is no
longer towing
but instead
growing weeds
- perhaps we
could call it
a truck
planter.
