"A Perishing Hope"

Message summary: What a blessing that we have the joy of a living hope rather than the despair of a perishing hope.

"Such is the destiny of all who forget God; so perishes the hope of the godless. What he trusts in is fragile; what he relies on is a spider's web. He leans on his web, but it gives way; he clings to it, but it does not hold" (Job 8:13-15)

Spider web

Have you ever walked into a spider web? Who among us hasn't! As you walk along your eyes may be focused on something distant and you don't see the spider web till you walk right through it. You still can't see it but you sure do feel it and immediately your arms begin to flail in an effort to get the icky stuff off, all the while hoping the spider was not in the web!

However, I'm really not worried about getting tangled in the web and being eaten by the spider for breakfast. But spiders and their webs are creepy and I don't want a spider bite, poisonous or not!

Most of us consider spiders and their webs icky, but today we're going to draw a spiritual lesson from one of the only two obscure references of the spider mentioned in the Bible. (The other is in Isaiah 59:5.)

Job is a remarkable book. Probably when most of us consider Job we recall the tremendous trial he endured, but there are so many gems of wisdom throughout the book. Today's portion is from a discourse by Bildad the Shuhite, one of Job's friends.* These three friends and their attempts to comfort Job were ultimately deficient but still contain some gems of wisdom.

The Scripture preceding our daily text has a timeless observation from nature: "Can papyrus grow tall where there is no marsh? Can reeds thrive without water? While still growing and uncut, they wither more quickly than grass" (Job 8:11,12). This is immediately followed by the statement in the daily text, "Such is the destiny of all who forget God; so perishes the hope of the godless".

Many of us enjoy a song titled "Living Hope" that describes Jesus as "Our living hope" (link below). Just imagine the contrast between one who has living hope and one who has perishing hope.

Bildad develops a truth based on the observation of a spider's web: "whose confidence is fragile, and whose trust is a spider’s web".

God's intended purpose for the spider's web is very efficient for its designed purpose. Spend some time observing nature and you will see the tiny creatures resting comfortably for hours on end in their home-made webs while also waiting for prey.

But it would be absolutely foolish for me, as a human, to count on a spider web to provide hope for my eternal destiny! Such absurd thinking is further described by Bildad in V. 15: "He trusts in his house, but it does not stand; he holds fast to it, but it does not endure". A similar but far more familiar illustration is the teaching of Jesus regarding the man who built his house on the sand (Matthew 7:24-27).

Bildad illustrates what the majority of people do rather than place their hope, trust and reliance on the Lord. Today let us hide this important truth deep within our hearts. What a blessing that we have the joy of a living hope rather than the despair of a perishing hope.

Praying man Daily prayer: God, You are the only source of living, eternal hope to whom we can cling. All earth-based hope is eventually a perishing hope but we can be confident that You will be with us to the end of our journey here on this earth. Family and friends are a source of joy as they enrich our lives daily, but as we grow older we're recognizing that nothing stays the same and much of what we've come to expect and rely on is no longer within our grasp. We find great comfort in the words of the 73rd Psalm, “Whom have I in heaven but Thee, and there is none that I desire on earth besides Thee. My flesh and my heart may fail but God is the strength of my heart and my portion forever". Thank You for giving us living hope through Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.

Brooksyne’s note:  Today’s text regarding the person who clings to the fragile things of life reminds me of Jonah’s attitude in Jonah 4.   When the vine God provided for temporary shade died overnight, he had clung so much to its temporary comfort, that he was “angry enough to die” upon discovering the vine had died. Talk about misplaced hope!

Check this out: The martyrdom of Charlie Kirk brought thousands of people to church on Sunday. Here are a few of the testimonies.

* Bildad the Shuhite prompts my memory of a corny Bible joke, "Who is the shortest man in the Bible?" Most would answer, "Zacchaeus" who climbed up in the sycamore tree to see Jesus. But we read of Bildad in Job who who was smaller since he was only shoe height!

Crossroads lady's breakfast

On Saturday morning I gathered with 26 other women from our Crossroads class for breakfast at Michelle Kirby's home in Manheim. After reading the amazing book, "Joy in a Foreign Land" written by Joan Denlinger (standing to my left in the photo wearing yellow/gold pants), I knew the women would enjoy reading her book and many did. But even better, we could hear her story in person if she accepted my invitation and she did. It was a beautiful morning on the 60 acre Kirby farm. Look carefully and you'll see the soybeans are near ripening stage in several of our photos.

Crossroads lady's breakfast
I planned the breakfast and Michelle (in the forefront) graciously provided the beautiful setting as well as the food and drinks. More than two hours were filled with laughter, plenty of conversation, singing of hymns, and Joan's amazing story followed by prayer.

Crossroads lady's breakfast
I slipped out of my chair to take this and other photos. Sitting next to me was Sadie Mae, my Amish friend, whom I'd invited to the breakfast. You'll read about her in the caption under the next photo.

Sadie running
Sadie took up running after the death of her baby girl, Rachel. They live in the country and she began to run on their long driveway and neighboring trails during her grieving process. She found it be somewhat therapeutic (my words), and what started out with just a few miles prepared her for a much bigger challenge. On June 22 of this year she and her son, Monroe, ran the 37-mile Rachel Carson Trail Challenge which includes a total elevation change of 8,000 feet. It was so unusual to have an Amish woman run in the race that her photo was featured in the Wall Street Journal, but we were unable to access that article. She enjoyed participating in that race so much that she and Monroe decided to run in another race more recently. It was 50 miles and took them 12 hours with the fastest runner completing the race in just 8 hours. Just thinking about it makes me short of breath! She and her husband have seven living children. (Amish are very humble and don't like to bring attention to themselves, but this achievement is noteworthy. I think Sadie would respond, "To God be the glory!" (The name "Rachel" which was her daughter's name is what got her interested in the 37 mile Trail Challenge initially.)

Reist popcorn sign
Late Saturday afternoon we went to a 100th anniversary celebration for Reist Popcorn Company, a local business here in Mount Joy.

Reist popcorn festival crowd
I'm sure the turnout far exceeded what they had planned for. It was held on a runway in a farm field (see here on Google map) and there were many thousands of people out (lots of young families). It was sort of like the Main Street in a State Fair!

Horse and wagon
Brooksyne and Ester drove over to the event but I rode my bike on what was essentially part of the Covered Bridge Classic bike ride which I participated in last month. After riding through two covered bridges on Saturday I came upon this interesting sight.
