"The Oak Tree Covenant"

Note: We were unable to post a message yesterday due to a long power outage related to a car accident in our neighborhood. It was my original intent to have two more messages from 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12 but there's too much interesting material to cover in one message so I hope to get back to it. However we will not be posting messages next week. (see note below)

Message summary: Let us all personally make or reaffirm our covenant to serve and obey the Lord!

Listen to our message on your audio player.

“So Joshua made a covenant with the people that day, and made for them a statute and an ordinance in Shechem. And Joshua recorded these things in the Book of the Law of God. Then he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak near the holy place of the LORD. ‘See!’ he said to all the people. ‘This stone will be a witness against us. It has heard all the words the LORD has said to us. It will be a witness against you if you are untrue to your God’” (Joshua 24:25-27).

We were disappointed in losing our two large oak trees in our front yard. Both needed removal due to disease. They were probably planted soon after our house was built in 1986 since prior to that time our lot was on farm land. That’s pretty young considering the lifespan of an oak, but they became large stately trees over a relatively short period of time.  Some species of oak have a life span of 600 years and they may have had an even longer lifespan 4,000 years ago.

The church property where we lived in New England had a huge oak tree in the back. I often wondered if this tree might have been around at the time of the American Revolution or even at the time the first Pilgrims landed at Plymouth in 1620, which was only 25 miles east of the church. Taunton, the town where we lived, was founded less than twenty years after Plymouth was founded. Our family had devotions under this large tree one night and I sought to teach the spiritual lesson found in the daily text.

An oak tree at Shechem is first referenced in Scripture in Genesis 12:6 where Abraham received assurance from God that He would keep His promises. Later, as Abraham’s grandson Jacob grew in his faith, an oak tree at Shechem was the place where Jacob’s family made a firm stand for God in burying their false gods under it (Genesis 35:4). And in our daily text many years later an oak tree at Shechem was the place where Joshua made a tangible memorial to the people concerning their covenant renewal to faithfully serve God. We wonder if this might have been the same tree.*

As Joshua’s life was coming to an end he called the people to Shechem and made a powerful appeal to serve God which includes a proclamation memorized by many Christians: “As for me and my house we will serve the Lord". We have often ended our prayers by reciting this verse together as a family. I am blessed when Ester adds the word “forever” at the end. Although it’s not in the original text I certainly believe it is a proper expression of commitment.

After Joshua made the personal proclamation and challenged the people to do the same, he took a large stone and set it up in a place clearly identifiable to the people, under an oak tree.  He said the stone would be a “witness against us".  The purpose of Joshua’s action seems to be that of a memorial that would remind the people of their solemn commitment to follow the Lord. The concept of a memorial is a pattern found throughout the Bible and would include "The Lord's Supper" when we "Do this in remembrance of Me".

Today, let us all personally make or reaffirm our covenant to serve and obey the Lord!

B e encouraged today! Hebrews 3:13

Praying man Daily prayer: Father, like the people who made a covenant in the presence of Joshua on that notable day, “We will serve the Lord our God and obey Him”, we too make a renewed covenant with You on this day and proclaim, “We will serve the Lord our God and obey Him!”  To quote this verse, but ignore its instruction, would be breaking our covenant with You, so we pause and reflect on this verse before we solemnly make this declaration: “By Your grace we will serve the Lord our God and obey Him.”  Amen.

* I realize of course that it cannot be stated with certainty that this was the very same oak tree in each instance.  However given the lifespan of an oak tree, and the clear landmark status this oak tree held in Shechem, it very well could have been. I also believe it’s significant that the definite article is used in each instance, signifying a specific oak.  Here is the text of the verses referenced above: “Abram passed through the land as far as the site of Shechem, to the oak of Moreh” (Genesis 12:6). “So they gave Jacob all the foreign gods they had and the rings in their ears, and Jacob buried them under the oak at Shechem” (Genesis 35:4).

The view looking down the Susquehanna River which runs into Chesapeake Bay. The Safe Harbor trestle is on the left. This section of the trail is very remote due to the bluffs along the river. Five miles to the trail head above here and three miles below.

Special note to local readers who may enjoy bike trails (that is bicycles not motorcycles!): This Saturday (June 14) I am arranging a bike trail ride on the Enola Low Grade Trail here in Lancaster County. This began as a gathering for members of our ABF class at church but others are always welcome. We will be starting at the trail at the Turkey Hill Nature Preserve on River Road at 9:00AM and riding down along the Susquehanna River, crossing the Safe Harbor trestle and then down to the Martic Forge trestle. Total about 9 miles one way. Here's info about the trail Just let me now if you might be interested and need more info. Send a message

Next week: I will be going down to North Carolina next week with a group of Amish youth who will be rebuilding following the devastating damage from the hurricane and flooding last fall. I am driving a van down with some of the team but most of the group (50+) will be using a tour bus. We will be working in the Chimney Rock/Bat Cave area near Lake Lure (I took the photo above some 20 years ago when we drove through that area.) Walter Waldvogel, a local friend who is also a retired electrician, is also going along and our primary duties will be driving the youth to and from the worksites each day as well as helping out however needed. The Amish have made significant contributions to relief efforts certainly in part due to their strong work ethic and skills in the trades.  See here and here for examples. They are working with a ministry based here in Lancaster County called Great Needs Trust. Back at the base camp in the evenings I've been asked to share Bible truths with the youth. We will not be preparing Daily Encouragement messages next week. Although Brooksyne is not going on the trip she has never learned the tech aspect of preparing and posting our messages.

Finally today:

Eric cutting tree down
Timber!
Yesterday the tree service completed the job of removing two large oaks from our front lawn. Here's one of the main trunks coming down.

Stump grinder
After the main trunk of the tree was cut down Matt removed the stump with a powerful stump grinder.

Stump grindings
The stump grindings form a large pile that needed removed so topsoil could be placed where the tree stood.

Front yard oak 9/13/17
Here's a photo of one of our large front lawn oaks from 8 years ago. These oaks had a common disease affecting oaks called "oak wilt".

Pam
A friend from our church, Pam Shellenberger, stopped by for a brief visit yesterday morning. There was a lot going on with the trees so Brooksyne and Pam decided to sit on the bench at the side of our house and watch the men hard at work as they visited together. Of course, Rosie got in the photo since she is Brooksyne's constant companion.
