I've had this Kember print practically since we began my ministry together in the seventies. What a solemn question and reminder from our Lord!

"My Spiritual Net Worth"

Note: We did not post a message yesterday. We were away on Tuesday ending with a minister's picnic in the evening in Cumberland County and yesterday morning Brooksyne had a procedure on her shoulder to hopefully alleviate the pain she has been enduring for almost a year.

Message summary: What is the most important aspect of "worth" in life? My spiritual net worth is altogether sufficient due to Christ's work on my behalf. He bestows His riches on all who call on Him!

Listen to our message on your audio player.

"For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul?" (Matthew 16:26). "You are not your own, for you were bought with a price" (1 Corinthians 6:19,20).

Net worthFinancial advisors recommend keeping track of your net worth, which should grow as you get older. Financial net worth is what you own less what you owe (assets minus liabilities). There are various widgets on the internet to assist you with determining your net worth and for many your financial software (like Quicken, which I use) has this capability.

Seeking to live life responsibly in regard to our finances is good stewardship and certainly a means of honoring God. Many are in terrible debt which enslaves. Proverbs 22:7 states, the "borrower is a slave to the lender". Of course the problem is not just individuals but our government as well. Our country is now 36 trillion dollars  in debt and growing by the minute!

This is a follow-up to the message we shared on Tuesday on our bodies being temples of God according to 1 Corinthians 6:19. But today let us just consider the phrase, "You are not your own, for you were bought with a price".

In this message let us take some time to think on net worth in another, far more important, sense. What is the most important aspect of "worth" in life? Put another way, what is my spiritual net worth?

My liabilities in this regard is my sin which, according to Scripture, result in my falling short of the glory of God (Romans 3:23) for "the wages of sin is death" (Romans 6:23).

In regard to attaining right standing before a holy God my good works are like filthy rags. The Bible's straightforward assessment is that "no one will be declared righteous in God’s sight by the works of the law" (Romans 3:20).

My spiritual net worth is determined by Christ's work. The only assets I have are Christ's righteousness imputed on my behalf. "For our sake He (God the Father) made Him (His Son Jesus) to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him (Jesus) we might become the righteousness of God" (2 Corinthians 5:21).

The song "Greater Still" by Brandon Lake expresses this truth well with these words.

My sin was deep
Your grace was deeper
My shame was wide
Your arms were wider
My guilt was great
Your love was greater still

My spiritual net worth is altogether sufficient due to Christ's work on my behalf. He bestows His riches on all who call on Him! (Romans 10:12). "For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sake He became poor, so that you by His poverty might become rich" (2 Corinthians 8:9).

B e encouraged today! Hebrews 3:13

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying man Daily prayer: Father, I am not my own, for I was bought at a great price, the sacrifice of Your beloved Son Jesus who came to earth with the mission of redeeming me from all my sins. There was nothing I could do about my sin problem, for I could not be declared righteous in Your sight by the works of the law. BUT for my sake You made Your Son Jesus to be sin who knew no sin, so that in Him I might become the righteousness of God. And because of His act of redemptive love my spiritual net worth is altogether sufficient, for You have chosen to bestow Your riches and eternal inheritance on me. Words are inadequate but fully dedicating my life to You  is my response to such wondrous love. Amen.

"My Worth Is Not In What I Own"   Watch on YouTube  Fernando Ortega  Like so much of their music which is consistently thoughtful, but especially ponder this stanza:

Two wonders here that I confess
My worth and my unworthiness

Brooksyne's note: My procedure yesterday was to treat Calcific Tendonitis, which was causing considerable pain in the rotator cuff of my right shoulder that was causing limited motion and extreme pain over the past few months. For those who might be curious I found a page that describes the procedure I had at the Bone Institute in Hershey, PA. Already I am starting to feel some relief and am anxious to eventually regain full range of the use of my right arm and shoulder.

Fly fishing on Yellow Breeches Creek
Tuesday afternoon we went on a trail bike ride in Cumberland County, PA. Crossing a bridge over Yellow Breeches Creek we saw an older couple fly fishing upstream. How nice it is to see old couples doing things together. There is no agreed upon explanation for the name Yellow Breeches Creek, which is found in land warrants as early as 1736.

Children's Lake, Boiling Springs
Children's Lake in Boiling Springs, PA is a spring fed lake made up of 30 natural springs with some 22 million gallons of daily output. The springs surge from an underground stream 1800 feet below the surface causing the water to bubble as it comes to the surface and thus named Boiling Water by early settlers (from a sign at the site). The Appalachian trail runs along the lake. Boiling Springs and Children's Lake on Google maps.

On the way over we stopped at Aschcombe Farm and Greenhouses in Grantham, PA, the largest greenhouse we know of. As Brooksyne meandered I saw this wall of old tools.

Phil Bongiorno
Tuesday evening we went to a picnic near Carlisle, PA for ministers in our area of Pennsylvania and visited for a few minutes with Phil Bongiorno, my District Superintendent when I was ordained in 1979. He is still chugging along at 93 years of age and dealing with some serious health issues. Friendly Joshua wanted to get in the photo as well! Note: I am actually not a giant!
