summary:
As temples of
the Holy
Spirit we have
been bought
with a price
solet us
glorify God
with our
bodies!

"Or
do you not
know that your
body is a
temple of the
Holy Spirit
within you,
whom you have
from God? You
are not your
own, for you
were bought
with a price.
So glorify God
in your body"
(1 Corinthians
6:19,20).
June is "Men's Health Month" I learned as I walked by a whiteboard at JK Mechanical, a company we visited last Friday. The "Bible Boost" on the white board especially caught my attention. We believe it's always good to point people to the Bible, so today let us consider these verses. ![]()
The
main
contextual
purpose in
this section
is the command
in the
previous verse
to: "Flee
from sexual
immorality.
All other sins
a person
commits are
outside the
body, but
whoever sins
sexually, sins
against their
own body"
(v.18).
Corinth was
notorious for
its sexually
immorality.
The popular
"religion" of
the day was to
"worship" by
visiting the
Temple of
Aphrodite
which had up
to 2000
"priestesses",
aka,
"religious
prostitutes".
The reality is
that in every
time
period and in
every place we
live there is
a luring
temptation to
engage in
sexually
immorality.
Thus,
Paul instructs
the Corinthian
believers with
these words,
"your
bodies are
temples of the
Holy Spirit,
Who is in you,
Whom you have
received from
God".
The temple in
The OT
represented
the place
where God
dwelt. In this
church age we
are His
temple; He is
dwelling in
each one of
us.
Paul
continues,
"You
are not your
own".
John Piper
writes, "The
ultimate
question is
not who you
are but whose
you are".
"You
were bought
with a price".
This is
speaking of
redemption.
Simply put,
"Christ paid a
debt He did
not owe and we
owed a debt we
could not
pay". (See
song below)
As Bible teacher Kenneth Wuest puts it,
"Our
Lord’s
precious,
outpoured
blood was the
ransom paid to
redeem slaves
of sin from
that slavery.
His death
satisfied the
just demands
of the High
Court of
Heaven, paying
the penalty
for the
sinner, and
making a way
whereby a
righteous God
could be just
and at the
same time the
Justifier of
the believing
sinner."
My worth of ultimate importance is based on the price paid by Jesus Christ at the cross. My value is fixed because the ransom was fully paid for my sins. "Therefore glorify God in your body". God gave us a body to live in during our earthly existence. Our purpose in this life is to glorify Him in our body. Oswald Chambers writes, "I am accountable to God for the way I control my body under His authority". The great Isaac Watts hymn, "When I Survey the Wondrous Cross" concludes with these soul-stirring words of conviction,
Love
so amazing, so
divine,
Demands my Soul, my Life, my All. As those who have been bought with a price let us glorify God with our bodies, for that is our ultimate offering! B e encouraged today! Hebrews 3:13
