The
season of
fresh locally
grown
strawberries
is here. But
it's woefully
too short!
Early Saturday
morning I
drove four of
our neighbor's
children over
to the
Rolling
Gardens Farm
Market on Rt
23 to pick
strawberries
and several
hours later
picked them up
to take them
back home.
Here is my
rich reward.
Brooksyne made
22 jars of
strawberry/rhubarb
jam that very
afternoon. We
had a great
harvest of
rhubarb
already and
are about to
pick a second
batch soon,
thanks to the
plentiful
rains over the
past
weeks.
"Richly Rewarded" Message summary: The key purpose of the entire letter to the Hebrews can be summed up in the exhortation and promise of the daily verse, "So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded".

"A
time to keep
and a time to
throw away"
(Ecclesiastes
3:6). "So do
not throw away
your
confidence; it
will be richly
rewarded. You
need to
persevere so
that when you
have done the
will of God,
you will
receive what
He has
promised"
(Hebrews
10:35,36).
Today is Trash Day where we live. This morning the trash and recycle trucks came down our rural road for a service we too often take for granted. For many years I have had the family assignment of taking the trash bags out to the road for pickup (though, on occasion, Ester likes to pitch in and help). But before the trash guys come out way there are times we realize we've thrown something unintended away. When that happens it's my job to put on the plastic gloves and dig through the mess to find it. If I do find it, it's almost like bringing home a treasure! We've probably all thrown away or gotten rid of something we later regret. There's sure some stuff of my Dad's I wish I now had, such as his stainless steel take-to-work Stanley Aladdin thermos that Mom filled with coffee early each morning before she kissed my dad good-by for the day. Not only would the thermos be practical since it lasts for decades, but it would also be sentimental! In our thrifty family in the early 60's that was a big purchase for my parents who grew up in the Great Depression. In recent years these are now "cool" again. They are named after William Stanley Jr. who invented the first all-steel insulated vacuum bottle in 1913. Mistakenly throwing out material things is one thing, but I want to be absolutely diligent about holding onto vital spiritual truths that lead to confidence in Christ. The first part of today's text is a forthright command, "So do not throw away your confidence". I want this to be drilled deeply into my heart. When I teach from the book of Hebrews I have often taught that this single verse summarizes the book's purpose in encouraging the initial recipients to remain faithful in the midst of the scorn and persecution they were enduring. It's a great truth for all readers to memorize. We all deal with different temptations and issues in life as we seek to stay faithful to Christ. The believers addressed in Hebrews were facing persecution and were tempted to go back to their old way of life. Perhaps part of the temptation was that in doing so their persecutions might ease. There are many believers today under similar circumstances. But going back to the old way of life remains a temptation to varying degrees for all believers, although for different reasons. For many readers it may be the busyness of life, affluence, the persistent barrage of godless, secular teaching or other influences that lull us into complacency or pull us back into the world. One that I have noticed is the heavy load that people bear as they overcome the consequences of many years of disobedience to God. It may be the years of godless attitudes that are hard to change or it may be tobacco, drug or alcohol use, sexual immorality or indebtedness due to wasteful spending. Turning to Christ does not immediately negate the long-term consequences of these past sins. Though some receive miraculous deliverance from destructive internal attitudes and/or external outward behaviors, there are those who will endure weaknesses and temptations that require diligent prayer and overcoming, for some the rest of their earthly lives. The enemy of our soul may persistently murmur, "What's the use?" and tempt us to just throw away our confidence and simply give up. Sadly, I know some who have done just that. A major theme throughout Hebrews is, "Let us hold firmly to the faith we profess". The word translated "hold firmly" is in the present active and conveys the ongoing need to actively participate in this "holding on" to our faith. But note the great promise in the daily text. I have been blessed by it often and committed it to memory: "So do not throw away your confidence; it will be richly rewarded". Any earthly rewards pale in comparison to the eternal rewards our heavenly Father bestows on the faithful believer. May the Lord's present and future promises strengthen your faith today and fill you with anticipation for the future when you will be "richly rewarded".
B e encouraged today! Hebrews 3:13

"Faithful Now" Watch on YouTube Calvary Church worship service from our service yesterday. The song begins: I am holding on to faith 'Cause I know You'll make a way I don't always understand, I don't always get to see But I will believe it, I will believe it
As
we sang it
yesterday I
had two
Andrews on my
heart: one is
the young
grandson of a
friend from
the church we
served in
northern PA
who continues
to have a very
difficult
battle with
cancer. The
other is a
friend from
the church we
served in New
England who,
along with his
wife, were in
a very serious
RV accident.
May God give
them this
confidence:
You make mountains move You make giants fall You use songs of praise To shake prison walls I will speak to my fear, I will preach to my doubt You were faithful then, You'll be faithful now ![]()
We
continue to
get inquiries
about Ester's
health so we
thought it
time for an
update and
photo. Ester
continues to
recover, but
it's a slow
one. She tires
easily but is
working hard
at getting
back to where
she was. Two
of the pets
were quite
happy as she
took them for
a walk this
morning, one
at a time, so
she walked
probably half
a mile! Randi,
our good
friend who
lives in New
Britton,
called Ester
up and told
her to pick a
favorite
restaurant and
she would take
her to lunch.

Note:
I froze 4
quarts of
chopped
rhubarb in
early May so
when Stephen
brought home a
flat of fresh
picked
strawberries
it seemed the
perfect day to
combine
rhubarb and
strawberries
to make
Strawberry
Rhubarb jam.
Just for fun I
took a jar to
our Crossroads
class
yesterday
morning. Since
it was my turn
to be the
Class Opener
(take prayer
requests,
praise
reports,
announcements,
pray, etc.) I
decided to
start the
class by
quoting Psalm
34:1-4.
I asked if any
class member
knew what
Scripture I
was quoting.
Right away a
class member
spoke out,
"Psalm 34". In
response I
pulled out a
jar of jam I
had stored on
the lower
shelf of the
lectern from
where I was
leading. He
was quite
surprised and
seemed just as
pleased.
(Strawberry
Rhubarb is a
very popular
combination in
our "neck of
the
woods"
for jam, pie,
etc.)
Remember
those days
when teachers
had surprise
gifts for
those who
could answer
correctly the
questions he
or she asked
the
class?
