Due to a busy
day for both
of us
yesterday we
did not post a
message. Message summary: The Faith Chapter (Hebrews 11) provides a graphic description of the torturing, suffering, and deaths of the people of faith. In God's providence some were delivered to have a slightly extended life but others were not. The words, "the world was not worthy of them" is a stinging indictment on the systems of this world and a truth that will be abundantly clear in eternity. Listen to our message on your audio player. "Some faced jeers and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. They were put to death by stoning; they were sawed in two; they were killed by the sword. They went about in sheepskins and goatskins, destitute, persecuted and mistreated—the world was not worthy of them. They wandered in deserts and mountains, living in caves and in holes in the ground. These were all commended for their faith, yet none of them received what had been promised, since God had planned something better for us so that only together with us would they be made perfect" (Hebrews 11:36-40). Bartlesville, Oklahoma is about 45 miles north of Tulsa Oklahoma where Brooksyne grew up. It has the unlikely distinction of having the only skyscraper, the Price Tower built in 1956, that was designed by famed architect Frank Lloyd Wright. For many years it was a hotel where we stayed in 2017. (Quite an experience.) Now it's fallen on hard times.* Bartlesville is also the unlikely headquarters of a Christian ministry, "Voice Of The Martyrs" which focuses on the plight of the persecuted. We took a tour in 2017 and entering the building there is a wall inscribed with the names of many who were martyred for their faith. Yes, there were many names inscribed, but just a very tiny percentage of those martyred over the last 2,000 years.
At
fourteen years
of age
Bonhoeffer
told his
family, "I
want to be a
minister".
They were
quite
disturbed at
his
announcement
and his
brother
responded,
"What a waste
of time the
boring church
would be". It
seems there
are still many
who see
ministry this
way!

Bonhoeffer's Execution: The camp doctor, H. Fischer-Hullstrung gave the following account:
On
the morning of
that day
between five
and six
o'clock the
prisoners were
taken from
their cells
and the
verdicts of
the court
martial read
out to them.
Through the
half-open door
in the rooms
of the huts I
saw Pastor
Bonhoeffer,
before taking
off his prison
garb, kneeling
on the floor
praying
fervently to
his God. I was
most deeply
moved by the
way this
lovable man
prayed, so
devout and so
certain that
God heard his
prayer. At the
place of
execution, he
again said a
short prayer
and then
climbed the
steps to the
gallows, brave
and composed.
His death
ensued after a
few seconds.
In the almost
fifty years
that I worked
as a doctor, I
have hardly
ever seen a
man die so
entirely
submissive to
the will of
God. (from

Further reflection from Brooksyne: I was listening to a conservative news station over Memorial Day weekend and the question was asked a veteran, "How can we best honor those who have given their all by laying down their lives for our country?" The veteran without pause responded: "I believe the best way to honor one who has given his or her life for our country is to live an honorable life, to serve our fellow man and to uphold the laws of our nation" (my paraphrase). I thought it was a fitting answer the vet gave. Let's further consider a similar question for the believer, "How can we best honor those who have given their all and laid down their lives for Christ?" As a follower of Christ I believe the best way to honor millions of courageous martyrs is to remain steadfast in our Christian walk, always abounding in the work of the Lord, and spreading the gospel message to all who will hear.

Brooksyne's
suggested
song:
Here's an
oldie but
goodie that I
learned as a
child. We
often sang the
first verse
and chorus of
Keep on the
Firing Line
in the church
I grew up in.
It was a fast,
hand-clapping
song so that's
probably why I
enjoyed it at
that point,
but as I
consider the
lyrics even
now I believe
it's a great
song to
remember to
stand against
evil when we
are facing the
firing line of
the devil, in
whatever form
it comes.

singers If you’re in the battle for the Lord and right, Keep on the firing line; If you win, my brother, surely you must fight, Keep on the firing line. There are many dangers that we all must face, If we die still fighting it is no disgrace; Cowards in the service will not find a place, So keep on the firing line. Refrain: Oh, you must fight, be brave against all evil, Never run, nor even lag behind; If you would win for God and the right, Just keep on the firing line.

Late
Tuesday
afternoon the
corn planter
came to seed
the field
across the
road. I
noticed the
tractor driver
walking
through the
field checking
the moisture
and after few
minutes Mike,
the farm owner
drove up.
After talking
for a few
minutes the
planter left
so they had
apparently
determined the
field was too
wet to plant.
I have two
farmer friends
in our
Crossroad
class, Bob and
Jim. We were
talking before
class last
Sunday and
they told me
you want to
see some dust
when you plant
corn. This is
a challenging
year for
farmers in our
area who
certainly see
the rain as a
blessing but
need some dry
weather to
plant! It
rained all day
yesterday and
it's forecast
tomorrow as
well. As I
recall the
corn is
usually
planted by
mid-May.
Hopefully next
week they can
plant!

Yesterday
we completed a
project we
started last
week. I had a
leak in a main
drain line
under my floor
that needed
replaced. Our
longtime
friend Mike
Gardner
removed the
fixtures and
flooring last
week to get
access to the
area and came
over this
morning to put
our bathroom
back together.
Mike is a
tradesman who
has a wide
skill set
level. He's on
the faculty at
Thaddeus
Stevens
College of
Technology.
Mike has hit
some rough
spots in life
but has
maintained his
steadfast
faith in
Christ.

As
mentioned
above we had a
busy day
yesterday and
thus delayed
sending this

meeting in
Lancaster.
Brooksyne
didn't get
home till
after 5 as she
was running
our Amish
neighbors on
some shopping
errands. She
does this as a
favor since
she also shops
(of course!).
We were
blessed by the
locally grown
flowers and
produce shown
above they
shared with
her.
Brooksyne:
I drove three
young mothers
to five
locations in
the constant
rain so it was
a rather soggy
day the entire
afternoon. But
we managed to
fill
(over-fill)
the van with
plants and
shrubbery from
the Amish
Greenhouse, a
number of
items from the
Gift and
Thrift Store,
groceries and
43 glass
vases. Teen
girls in two
of these
families grow
flowers and
prepare
beautiful
arrangements
for their
produce stands
throughout the
spring and
summer and
always need
donated or
inexpensive
vases to keep
the price low.
After I
dropped off
each lady they
presented
gifts of food
and flowers
for me to take
home. Annie's
girls made the
Memorial Day
themed flower
arrangement
(above).
Emma's family
grows arugula,
mushrooms and
lettuce greens
for the farm
co-op and gave
me samplings.
Leah gave me
homegrown
strawberries
earlier in the
week. I
sampled each
when I came
home and it's
the freshest
produce I've
eaten, right
out of the
garden! Emma
was excited to
share her
arugula with
me in their
brand new
biodegradable
and
compostable
fresh produce
bags. You
reuse the bag
to collect
food scraps
and organics
at home for
composting and
throw the bag
in with the
compost! Great
idea!!
