"Our Eternal Home"

Message summary: One day we will be transferred to our permanent home, a home not built with human hands!

Listen to our message on your audio player.

"Now if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him" (Romans 6:8). "Now we know that if the earthly tent we live in is destroyed, we have a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands" (2 Corinthians 5:1). "I think it is right to refresh your memory as long as I live in the tent of this body, because I know that I will soon put it aside, as our Lord Jesus Christ has made clear to me" (2 Peter 1:13,14).

A friend and I walked through a huge mansion under construction here in the Lancaster area.
I purposefully counted the bathrooms (at least seven) and I quipped to my friend as we drove off, "Do you think they'll be keeping the job "Johnnie" at the end of the driveway when the house is finished?" With a chuckle he responded, "Probably, just in case they can't make it into the house!" (As we get older we're more familiar with that and it might be a nice feature to have, though rather unsightly.)

One of the construction workers, seeing me walk around, asked if I was the owner! I told him I wasn't, but my mansion is under construction on the other side. I was alluding to the KJV translation of John 14:2 when Jesus said, "In my Father's house are many mansions".

Yesterday I taught in our Adult Bible Fellowship class (AKA Sunday School) from 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18, often called the "Rapture passage". This week I expect to glean some messages from that study.

Early in the message I played a brief clip that features two twins in the womb discussing whether or not there would be life after delivery. It is really a parallel to discussion about life after death. (There is a link to the clip below.) Through and through the Bible teaches there is life after death!

In 2 Corinthians chapters 4 and 5 the Apostle Paul, inspired by the Holy Spirit, shares some incredible insights regarding the perspective we should have as we live out our life on this earth. Apart from a few select people throughout history (Enoch and Elijah), all have experienced the destruction of the earthly tent we live in. We call that death. There will also be a group who will be alive at the return of Christ. They too will experience a transition w/o death (see 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18).

Paul uses the phrase "earthly tent" to describe the temporary nature of our present dwelling. One commentary makes this observation: "The figure of a tent picturing the human body suggests impermanence and insecurity and is a common picture of earthly life and its setting in the body." *

Our future home is "a building from God, an eternal house in heaven, not built by human hands".  Wow, what a powerful description! Today may this encourage those with loved ones in heaven. May it also encourage those dealing with ongoing physical affliction or situations that seem so broken.

The ongoing challenge for us is not driving the stakes too deep in this present "tent". We must be very cautious about not getting too settled or comfortable.  That's particularly true for those who live in relative affluence, which can be such a seducing trap. One day we will be transferred to our permanent home, a home not built with human hands!

Now I belong to Jesus,
Jesus belongs to me,
Not for the years of time alone,
But for eternity!

B e encouraged today! Hebrews 3:13

Praying manDaily prayer:  Jesus, I know that temporary dwellings built by human hands cannot compare with the eternal house You are building in heaven for those who believe. Since my ability to visualize this heavenly dwelling is extremely limited, I ask for a heavenly vision to grasp the indescribable home You have prepared for me. Help me to fix my heart and my mind on that which is unseen, rather than that which perishes since eternal hope does not diminish with the disappointments of the day. Thank You that I have an eternal home being prepared for me in heaven because of what You did for me here on earth, by dying for my sins that I might have eternal life! Amen.

"Going Home"  Watch on YouTube  Dedicated to Deb Strickler whose mother was recently transported to her Eternal Home. Going Home hymn background (adapted):  In 1967 Bill and Gloria Gaither had been holding services for a week in a church in Tennessee. As young parents they also brought their one year old, Suzanne. The week was over and the Gaithers said good-bye to friends, packed their suitcases in the station wagon,  and headed out for their long drive home to Indiana. As they were pulling out of the parking lot, Suzanne asked, "Where are we going now, Mommy?" "Home, sweetheart," Bill answered. "We're going home." Little Suzanne clapped her hands and made up a song. "Going home. We're going home," she sang until she finally fell asleep....There was something so comforting about finally leaving the place they'd been visiting to head home where they belonged. Suzanne's exuberant jingle about home gave the Gaithers an idea for a new song, as the little tune she made up kept going through their minds. Gloria writes, "One of these days our Father will scoop us up in His strong arms and we will hear Him say those sweet and comforting words, 'Come on, Child. We're going home.'"

Brooksyne's note:

Grandma and Grandpa Sherrell (my dad's parents) lived in the hills of Arkansas about 180 miles from my home town of Tulsa, Oklahoma.  Three to four times a year our family would make the long journey to visit them over the weekend and we children always spent a week with them during the summer.  I very specifically recall how Grandpa would sit my sister and me on his lap and talk about heaven.

Being a colorful storyteller he would describe what heaven looked like and tell why he and Grandma were going there. Grandpa told this same story most every visit but somehow I never tired of hearing his repetitious story. Perhaps it was because his eyes sparkled, his countenance brightened and a little quiver  in his voice as he would talk of heaven. He made it seem like it was going to take place that same day and he was preparing me for the great event.

In fact the event did not take place for another decade or so when Grandpa left the "tent of his body." Though I loved him immensely, when I attended his funeral I didn't weep with sorrow, although I did shed tears of joy. I still remember how joyful the occasion was because Grandpa had given me a picture in my mind of him being in heaven and enjoying all the things he described to me throughout my childhood. The big event for him had finally taken place.

It's been almost fifty years since he joined the saints in heaven, but I'll always remember his oft-repeated stories of going to be with Jesus. He talked to me often about the things that really matter and I, too, long for that union in heaven when I shall behold the Lamb of God.

Notsen and Tho
Saturday evening we attended a gathering for our Zimbabwean friends Notsen and Thobe Ncube. They came to the states ten years ago so Notsen could further his education. Several years ago they returned to Zimbabwe but were back on Saturday since he received is dr from Lancaster Bible College. Today he heads back to Zimbabwe as he oversees seven churches there along with other pressing duties. We'll be visiting with Tho as she will remain in the states for further schooling.

Nathan and friends
When the Ncubes came ten years ago they brought their two young sons, Nathan and Neville. Now Nathan (middle) is a college graduate and working in the Philadelphia area as an accountant. In the photo are two friends from work, one from Nigeria and the other from Tanzania. All three profess faith in Christ.

First snowball for African boys
The Ncubes arrived in January 2015 and experienced snow for the first time the first Sunday they attended church. I took a photo of them after I showed them how to make their very first snowballs!

Bud and Sue and students
Bud and Sue sit near us in church. Yesterday they introduced two students whom they have been hosting all year, one from Nigeria and the other from Columbia. There's so many ways people serve the Lord!

Choir for hymn sing
Brooksyne had a very busy day yesterday joining the choir for our three regular services then again in the afternoon for a county-wide hymn sing.
They didn't videotape the service but here is one of my favorites we sang.

Finally today:

Horses on Amish farm
Driving home from our gathering Saturday evening we drove through the country and Ester took our opening photo of the sheep and these young foals on an Amish farm. They were having a great time running back and forth exercising their long, limber legs!
