"Keeping Your Spiritual Fervor"

Note: Due to a busy day a message was not posted yesterday.

Message summary:  Given the temptation of spiritual boredom we all need to regularly heed Paul's words to Timothy "to fan into flame the gift of God" (2 Timothy 1:6).

Listen to our message on your audio player.

"Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord" (Romans 12:11). "Fan into flame the gift of God" (2 Timothy 1:6).

Children playing Since 2002 we have lived in a neighborhood where the neighbors closest in vicinity have been older than us, so we had no young children playing, apart from occasional visits by grandchildren.

The last four years we've have two new families move in with young children which sure adds life to the neighborhood. These children play outside a lot just like we did in the 60's and it brings joy to see them exploring their world such as riding their bikes, playing ball, and collecting cicada shells. They also love taking our dogs for walks in their yard which is a good thing for them (our dogs). These kids just don't seem to be bored!

We who are redeemed are living spiritually in our Father's kingdom. But can boredom set in and deter our zeal and enthusiasm? Of course it can! Jesus addresses this in Revelation in His letter to the Ephesians, "you have left your first love" and to the church at Laodicea, "you are lukewarm".

"Being on fire for God" is an expression used to describe a sold out, uncompromised, committed follower of Christ. The daily Scripture text teaches us to, "Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord" (Romans 12:11). We both memorized this verse as young Christians and recite it regularly.

John Wesley has a famous description concerning his conversion, "I felt my heart strangely warmed". The challenge is keeping that warm heart through life as we invariably encounter circumstances that seek to make our hearts cold! Boredom is one of them and a strategy of Satan.

Each of the three phrases in this verse is rich in meaning but today let us consider just the second phrase, "but keep your spiritual fervor". The underlying Greek word for "fervor" is "zeo", which means, "to be hot". The English word "zeal" is derived from this word.

This word "zeo" is used to describe the preaching of Apollos in Acts 18:25 who "spoke with great fervor". This word suggests having plenty of heat to produce adequate, productive energy, but not so much heat that one goes out of control. The idea is not of being overheated to the point of boiling over and out of control but, like a steam engine, of having sufficient heat to produce the energy necessary to get the work done.

The challenge in the spiritual life is to maintain this fervency in spirit throughout life. Another version states, "Keep your spiritual fervor". I think all of us have to fight the tendency for our spiritual fervor to wane. The need for maintaining this fervor in our walk with God is of paramount importance. Jesus, in describing the last days stated, “Because lawlessness is increased, most people’s love will grow cold" (Matthew 24:12).

Given the temptation of spiritual boredom we all need to regularly heed Paul's words to Timothy "to fan into flame the gift of God" (2 Timothy 1:6). The Greek word translated "fan into flame" signifies the recovering of fire choked with ashes or decaying. It's kind of like stirring up a campfire early in the morning. May God stir up that zeal in each one of us.

Oh Lord, please light the fire
That once burned bright and clean
Replace the lamp of my first love
That burns with holy fear

Be encouraged today!  Hebrews 3:13

Praying man Daily prayer:  Father, during times of peace, prosperity and easy going we acknowledge the tendency to grow spiritually bored. Help us to stir up the fire of Your Holy Spirit in our lives through faithful reading and application of the Scriptures. Though there are daily temptations, disappointments, and experiences that could easily extinguish the fire of Your Spirit in our lives, we thank You that Your abiding presence in our hearts is greater than the enemy of our soul that seeks to deter us. May we keep our spiritual fervor in serving You all the days of our life through Christ we pray. Amen.

Let us conclude with a list of suggestions on maintaining your spiritual fervor:

  • Bible reading, study and application (obedience)
  • Prayer
  • Being in service for Christ.
  • Faithful attendance in a Bible-faithful, God-fearing local church.
Associating with those who have spiritual fervor since it is contagious.
  • Listening to godly music, reading good books, etc. and abstaining from all which leads us astray.
  • Lastly, but not of least importance, we should be contributing generously to the cause of Christ, since "where our heart is, there our treasure is also".

 Another thought on boredom:

A Biblical example of boredom. “A man had two sons. The younger of them said to his father, 'Father, give me the share of the estate I have coming to me.' So he distributed the assets to them. Not many days later, the younger son gathered together all he had and traveled to a distant country, where he squandered his estate in foolish living" (Luke 15:11-13).

The main focus of the parable of the prodigal son is the father's readiness to forgive the wayward son. However let's muse on why the son left his father's house in the first place. He, like so many, thought the grass was greener on the other side. Was he bored in his father's house doing the same chores day after day after day? But I wonder how long did he find pleasure in he "excitement" of foolish and wasteful living? Probably not very long!

Today's message is in part prompted by a text from, a friend Larry Garber who is in his 70's but still conveys zeal in life. He shared about his various ministry endeavors and I texted back simply "Roman 12:11" expecting he would look it up.

Ester, who has had a phobia in the past about birds, has enjoyed patiently taking photos of the robin family right outside our dining room window, including our lead photo today.

Robin with tasty meal
In this photo the robin looks like she has a grub to feed her young. Ester took this outstanding video of another meal (45 seconds). It's silent since she was on the inside of our dining room window.

Baby birds
We expect the baby birds will fledge soon and leave the nest. Bird banders have found that only 25% of young robins survive their first year. Of those that survive their first year, wild robins may live to be about 5 or 6.

Today's very sad update: All the above photos and video Ester took on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week. As a family we all three had become very fond of these robins and gently walked past the nest so we wouldn't disturb the babies or Mom and Dad. It was somewhat difficult since the nest is right next to our sliding doors on our deck.

But yesterday morning Rosie, our little malti-poo, who has been curious about the nest for weeks got out on the deck and jumped up close enough to the nest that she frightened the baby birds causing them to jump out of the nest prematurely. She immediately caught one of them. The other one got away and we sure hope it survived. We're also hopeful the robin couple tries to use the nest again and if so we will go to the trouble of keeping the dogs, especially Rosie, away from the site after the eggs hatch!

Finally today:

We had our friends Nick & Drema and Bob & Laura over for brunch yesterday. The ladies brought food and we ate the specially requested Tomato Pie popular with all the wonderful tomatoes we have right now.
Brooksyne's Note: Yesterday was a tough day for our family who delighted in watching the baby robins being hatched and then growing bigger everyday. We enjoyed watching Mom and Dad feeding them (or maybe it was just Mom though each of them sat on the fence post with insects in their mouths). And we so enjoyed watching the videos Ester made so we could see them up close. When I stepped out on the deck to carry food to the table for our guests yesterday morning I realized what had just happened and saw the bird lying dead on the deck. It broke my heart and I would have broken down and cried if we hadn't been hosting our friends who had just arrived for our brunch date.

I did step over to the other side of our deck where the bird had died and called out to Mom and Dad Robin who were still in the vicinity, and with all my heart I genuinely said over and over, "I'm sorry. I am so, so sorry!" I didn't know what more I could do but I felt just awful.

After our guests left I went next door to visit our neighbors and take them some leftover food. The first thing Marion said to me was, "Brooksyne, I just have to ask you, what were you repenting of this morning?" Well, I scratched my head (so to speak) having no idea what she was talking about and told her so. Marion explained that she was sitting on her back yard deck and overheard me saying over and over, "I'm sorry, so sorry" and began to think I had broken a valuable item or had upset Stephen and was asking his forgiveness.  I asked Marion, "Was that around 10 am?" and she indicated it probably was.

It was then that I realized she had heard me apologizing to the bird couple and took it that I was repenting of a deed. Well, in a way I was...I was repenting for little Rosie who took the bird from the Robin family. This note may sound kind of silly, but we do think in human terms and express ourselves that way also, even if we're communicating with birds and dogs.
