Final Breath"
Message summary: Today we consider the inevitable "life's final breath". Listen to our message on your audio player.
"Then
Abraham
breathed his
last and died
at a good old
age, an old
man and full
of years; and
he was
gathered to
his people"
(Genesis
25:8). "With a
loud cry,
Jesus breathed
His last (Mark
15:37). Last night we received word that Jim, o ur longtime close friend, breathed his last on this side of glory. We met Jim and his wife Dorothy (Dottie) at a "Vision New England" conference in Boston over 25 years ago. We were there to tell people about our relatively new Daily Encouragement ministry and the concept of sending devotionals by email. Jim worked with SEND, a mission agency, was a bold witness for Christ and for many years ministered to those in prison. He signed up to receive our messages and that facilitated our contact through the years. We visited them in their home near Ocean City, New Jersey several times and we wrote one memorable story from our overnight stay.* In 2015 they made the move to Lancaster and took up residency at "Calvary Homes", a Christian retirement community. So we saw them a lot more often. Jim and Dottie celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary in April, a couple months before he turned 91. Early in their marriage Jim was an unbeliever and alcoholic before God saved him and delivered him from alcoholism. He and Dottie shared their story with many people, also in Christian Women's Clubs and other such settings. Jim, along with Dorothy, has had a lifetime of fruitful ministry impacting many for the Lord. We last visited with them on Sunday as Dottie sat in the chair beside his hospice bed. Though Jim was in a comatose like state as he was unresponsive but breathing steadily, Dottie rarely took her eyes off of him, and often reached over and patted his hand. Her love to the very end beautifully exemplified their wedding vows, "till death do us part". Jim's manner of death brought back memories of my own dad, who died in a similar condition.
The
phrase "breathed
his last"
is used in
Genesis to
describe the
death of the
patriarchs and
also in the
Gospels to
describe the
death of
Jesus.
Sunday
afternoon as I
watched Jim
breathe,
knowing his
final breath
was nearing,
these
Scriptures
came to mind
as well as the
words from a
song: From life’s first cry to final breath, Jesus commands my destiny.
It's
not my normal
style to
provide
exposition to
a song as we
typically do
for a
Scripture text
but these
lyrics are
very
thoughtful. "From life's first cry". Developing babies need oxygen beginning early in pregnancy. Babies don’t truly breathe in the womb. Instead, the umbilical cord provides the baby with oxygen until the first breath after birth. (from a medical site) . At birth there's a strong cry as the lungs kick into operation and we begin to breathe. We take some 7.5 million breaths annually (some 800 million by age 80). "To final breath". In one way or another we will all take a final breath. Even if we are among those living at the time of the Lord's return we will breathe in and out a final breath on this side! The word "to" represents our span of life, the dash between our birth date and death date. Paul wrote, "For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain" (Philippians 1:21). Are you living for Christ? Will death ultimately be your gain or loss? "Jesus commands my destiny". What powerful assurance this truth brings. Ultimately from our first breath (actually our conception) to our final breath we are under His control.

We
dedicate this
song to Dottie
as Matt
lyrically
describes the
life we have
in Christ
through His
grace, "It's
there in the
newborn cry
....there in
the sorrow and
the dancing.
It's there on
a wedding day,
there in the
weeping by the
graveside,
there in the
very breath we
breathe, Your
great grace". "Hymn of Heaven" Watch on YouTube Phil Wickham We dedicate this to Jim, who is now breathing the air of heaven. How I long To breathe the air of Heaven Where pain is gone And mercy fills the streets To look upon The One who bled to save me And walk with Him For all eternity
Bible
verses
describing
death as final
breath * Funny experience at Jim and Dorothy's home near Ocean City from 2007: We were presenting our ministry at a mission conference on the New Jersey shore and stayed with Jim and Dottie. Through the night an intense odor developed that smelled like a faulty septic system. Brooksyne suggested that I shut the window but the odor still seemed to increase and I wondered if it might be coming up through their basement. We debated as to whether we should say anything as we discussed the problem. If they don't smell the stench our suggestion of a foul odor might embarrass or even worse offend them, but on the other hand perhaps we needed to alert them to a problem they might be unaware of. As I visited with Jim over coffee I decided to carefully bring it up. Jim started laughing and quickly called his wife. I wondered, "Oh no, what have I done now. We'll never be invited to stay here again." Jim explained, "Because we live next to the Bay at low tide with the right wind conditions this is a 'normal' recurring odor." As we took an early walk yesterday morning with Pal, Jim's dog, I noted the faint odor and chuckled about our faulty conclusion earlier.
Jim

became friends
with Edward

Ed served as

of our
Southern New
England
district when
I pastored a
church in
Taunton, MA
and conducted
the
installation
service for us
when I began
my pastorate
there in 1993.
Gladys died
several years
ago. Ed, now
at the age of
98, is a
regular reader
of our DE and
we just talked
to him on the
phone today.
He shared how
much he
appreciated
Jim's bold
witness for

Yesterday
we enjoyed
brunch with
John and his
wife, Vicki.
Stephen took
this photo as
we were
enjoying tres
leches cake
together. John
has been the
choir director
of our church
for over 35
years and once
a month the
choir has
Super Saturday
when they join
together with
the orchestra
for practice.
During a 20
minute break
the choir and
orchestra have
fellowship
over the food
they bring and
share
together. Over
the years I
have learned
that John
really likes
tomato pie and
coconut dishes
- so we had
both along
with some good
fellowship and
a garden walk
where we
discussed the
flowers and
plants in our
yard. Vicki
and John also
do a lot of
gardening,
both
ornamental and
vegetable so
it was nice to
share together
that which we
enjoy doing
each summer.
"Bless The Lord O My Soul" Watch on YouTube Calvary Church choir and orchestra. Brooksyne's Note: I especially like the line "Who forgives every sin, Who is raising us to new life again." We followed up two songs later with Fanny Crosby's classic hymn, To God be the Glory, which includes the line, "The vilest offender who truly believes that moment from Jesus a pardon receives" Psalm 51:2 (KJV) says “Wash me throughly from mine iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin". Did you catch an uncommon word in this verse? My computer has underlined the word thinking I meant to spell "thoroughly" but I didn't. The KJV is old English and uses the word, "throughly". It's the Psalmist's prayer asking God to wash him through and through, not just on the outside but on the inside as well. It's easier to clean up the outside than the inside isn't it! This song reminds me that when I get down to serious business with God I am assured that no sin is too tough or dirty for God to forgive since He forgives every sin.
