3) Personal
note:
Tomorrow
morning we
will head out
to Wisconsin.
My brother
Mike is
traveling with
us to the
Steincross
reunion where
we will visit
with cousins
from Mom's
side over a
three day
period. We are
the aging
grandchildren
who got to
know each
other as
children on a
farm near
Harwood, a
tiny town
(population
was 29 in the
2020 census)
in southwest
Missouri while
visiting our
grandparents,
George
Washington and
Nellie Mae
Steincross. We
demonstrate
the
truthfulness
of the
Scriptural
statement,
"Generations
come and
generations
go"
(Ecclesiastes
1:4). We expect to resume writing messages again on weekdays on July 28th after our return from Wisconsin. Message summary: Today we again consider standing at the crossroads; it's a crossroads we all have in common.

“This is
what the LORD
says: ‘Stand
at the
crossroads and
look; ask for
the ancient
paths, ask
where the good
way is, and
walk in it,
and you will
find rest for
your souls.’
But you said,
‘We will not
walk in it’”
(Jeremiah
6:16).
"Crossroads"
in life are
pivotal
moments when
one must make
a significant
decision that
could alter
his or her
path, values,
or future
direction.
These moments
often involve
uncertainty,
risk, and
reflection.
Most
of our early
life
crossroads
decisions were
made for us by
our parents. I
don't recall
finishing
kindergarten
and seriously
considering
whether I
should
continue on
with my
education!
But
as we approach
our adulthood
we face more
and more
crossroads in
life. Will I
go to college
and where,
what type of
work will I
do, who will I
marry and on
and on the
list goes.
As
life proceeds
more and more
crossroads are
imposed on us,
often
involuntarily
such as that
trial you
never expected
to have. About
25 years ago I
endured a
lengthy health
trial and
developed this
maxim I often
share with
others: You
don't pick
your trials
and you don't
schedule them.
Retirement
is a
crossroads
people my age
deals with. We
deal with
questions
like: when
should I
retire, what
will I do,
should I move,
etc.
And
then there's
the crossroad
when a spouse
dies.
But
the greatest
crossroad for
people in
every walk of
life and every
age is
expressed in a
timeless call
to faith
issued by
Joshua: “Choose
for yourselves
this day whom
you will
serve”
(Joshua
24:15).
This
is not an
optional
crossroad
although it is
so often
ignored.
Ignoring it
just delays
the
consequences.
Some came to
faith at an
early age and
being at this
crossroad may
not be a
distinct
memory. But
others came to
believe after
a long life of
disbelief and
rebellion so
this crossroad
is a very
distinct
memory. Many
know the exact
time and
place. Paul is
an example of
one who had
this type of
crossroads
conversion.
But
there is also
a sense that
this is a
daily
crossroads
decision. Each
day we make
the choice,
will I serve
self or will I
serve God.
May
our response
be the same as
Joshua’s: "But
as for me and
my household,
we will serve
the Lord".

For
over 20 years
we have driven
a Chrysler
Town and
Country
minivan. I
have always
associated
Town and
Country
nameplate with
the minivan
but prior to
that the name
was used for a
station wagon.
Look at the
length of that
hood! (I saw
this car in
the auto
museum in
Hershey on
Tuesday)
Finally
today:
A
musing on
making wise
choices at the
various
crossroads of
life.
We
have two
photos on our
fridge of two
neighboring
families we
became friends
with after we
moved to
Lancaster
County in
2001. At that
time their
children were
very young or
in one case
the oldest two
were young
adults. The
photos, nearly
25 years
later, show
them with
their grown
children and a
lot of
grandchildren.
I consider the
many
crossroads
they have had
yet they made
wise choices
and stayed
faithful to
the Lord. Now
in their older
years they are
experiencing
the fruit of
their
faithfulness.
