2 Thessalonians 2:16,17

"Eternal Encouragement"

Message summary: Today we earnestly make Paul’s prayer our own prayer for all our readers, especially those whose hearts are weighed down with heavy burdens. We offer this prayer as a kind word to cheer you on. We say to those with an anxious heart, "Take courage, fear not".

Listen to our message on your audio player.

“An anxious heart weighs a man down, but a kind word cheers him up” (Proverbs 12:25). “Say to those with an anxious heart, ‘Take courage, fear not’” (Isaiah 35:4). “May our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who loved us and by His grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word” (2 Thessalonians 2:16,17).

Yesterday I had greeter duty, standing at the entrance and opening the door for those entering. Brooksyne prayed for me early in the morning, reminding me that someone might be coming in with a heavy heart or may be discouraged and that greeting would be their first church encounter of the morning. People have many burdens for a wide variety of reasons and these concerns can weigh a heart down. Rarely a day goes by that we don’t encounter someone with a heavy heart.

For many my greeting yesterday included a phrase from our daily text to the effect "May you experience eternal encouragement".

Bob teaching Crossroads ABF

This text was part of our lesson in our Crossroads ABF class yesterday that Bob, a fellow teacher, taught. I had read the portion in preparation for the study. It's a simple prayer that is appropriate for everyone at all times. In the flow of Paul’s writing he neither introduces this prayer nor formally ends it such as we do when we say "Amen". It seems to be woven right into the fabric of his letter. Paul, on several occasions, makes statements indicating how frequently he prays for others and this has often intrigued me since he had so many churches and "contacts" under his care.  In other words his circle was very large!

Paul made prayer a vital part of his daily walk, demonstrated by his offering this powerful but brief prayer for the Thessalonian believers as he wrote to them.  He is practicing his own words in his first letter to them: “Pray without ceasing” (1 Thessalonians 5:17).

Today we earnestly make Paul’s prayer our own prayer for all our readers, especially those whose hearts are weighed down with heavy burdens. We offer this prayer as a kind word to cheer you on. We say to those with an anxious heart, "Take courage, fear not".

“May our Lord Jesus Christ Himself and God our Father, who loved us and by His grace gave us eternal encouragement and good hope, encourage your hearts and strengthen you in every good deed and word”.

We pray that:

* You will have a deep assurance of God’s love and grace.
* You will receive and experience the “eternal encouragement and good hope”.
* Your hearts be encouraged and strengthened in every good deed and word.

B e encouraged today! Hebrews 3:13

Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

Praying man Daily prayer: Father, it’s been said that “Courage is fear that said its prayers”. And it’s true that You can change our hearts and outlook even when the circumstances, from our viewpoint, have not changed. But it requires our dependency on You through perseverance in prayer which results in absolute trust. We can be assured of Your eternal encouragement and good hope as it encourages our hearts and strengthens us in every good deed and word. It is through Christ Jesus our Lord that we pray in faith believing that You turn trial into triumph, as You work out all things together for our good. Amen.

Brooksyne's note: Regarding my reminder to Stephen yesterday as a greeter:

The article I share below has influenced my greetings with others in a group or church setting ever since I read it in a magazine about 45 years ago. I often seek out a person who might be sitting alone at church including those I've never met. It's a great way to meet others and let them know their presence is valued. Recently, I saw a young girl sitting on the front pew which is not where young people usually sit in our service. I was visiting with a friend sitting the opposite end of the pew so I stopped to meet the girl who was sitting alone. Turns out Ava is going into her senior year of high school and attends our church on her own, without her family. She told me she is planning to attend Lancaster Bible College upon her graduation from high school. It took me back to my senior year in high school when I was attending church all by myself. I was grateful for those who took a personal interest in me at that time and I think she might have felt the same way as we had a very nice conversation. I hope to see her again though it's a very large church and she might not choose the same place to sit. When she comes to mind I pray for her that she will let nothing deter her from following God's calling to enter into Christian ministry.

There are many people, young and old, rich and poor, who live in loneliness and crave the human touch. Some of you reading this message know from personal experience just what I’m talking about. Let me illustrate by sharing the following true story.

"Lonely People" magazine article:

A widow lived alone. She made dinner every night for one and had conversation with none. Most of her closest friends had died, people rarely stopped by, and her phone never rang. She experienced a loneliness that grew day by day, increasing her desire to fellowship with her brothers and sisters, to hear their conversation, and to feel their touch. Her fragile health forced her to be quarantined in her loneliness for a number of weeks.

One Sunday morning she mustered all the strength she could to dress herself and get ready for church. Her anticipation grew as she thought about how good it would be to meet with others again. She pictured herself receiving a handshake from the pastor; maybe a hug from her sisters in Christ. She needed to feel the warmth of someone’s flesh besides her own.

She was able to get a ride to and from church but returned to her home disappointed and still lonely. You see, the people didn’t even notice her as they filed past her to get to their own circle of friends. No word of greeting, not one handshake was extended to this lonely widow. No warm conversation took place such as “We’ve missed you so much. We’ve been praying for you! How are you feeling?”

Viewing photos of NC trip
Yesterday afternoon the 4 families who participated in the trip to North Carolina two weeks ago came over for a cookout at our place and visited together until early evening. Brooksyne snapped this photo just outside of the office with our friends gathered around my large monitor as we viewed the many photos from our trip.

Puppy curiosity
We had a full house with nine adults, eight guest children and two guest pets along with our three pets, which included an 8 week toy poodle, Sonia. She became the center of attention for everyone, especially our malti-poo Rosie, who couldn't take her eyes off her. Perhaps she was curious about her size, age or breed. Conan was our other guest pet who was also checking out little Sonia. Perhaps Conan is hoping he's not being replaced since he's had Randi all to himself up to this point.

Group photo on Chimney Rock
Here's a photo of the youth work team the last day when they visited Chimney Rock following their work that day.

Under waterfall
Last Thursday I shared a photo of the Hickory Nut waterfall I had taken from an observation deck for "normal" tourists when visiting Chimney Rock State Park.  On their guided tour the park ranger gave the youth permission to climb down and stand under the waterfall!

Finally today:

Amish church traffic
Yesterday it was our Amish neighbors' turn to hold church at their farm (which is the Amish custom every other week). Aaron and Annie were hosting approximately 35 families who were descending upon their 7 acre spread just up the road from us as Stephen was headed to church. It leads to a lot of traffic as the buggies converging and the boys walking.

Another horse and buggy drove by our house just as Brooksyne opened the front door at home. Rosie dashed out and chased the buggy up the road past two houses much to the delight of the children looking out the back opening, though Brooksyne was not at all delighted with Rosie!
