Brown family cabin, NC
This rustic cabin was on the farm where the volunteer workers lodged last week while in North Carolina. It was built around 1850 and the older man who owned the farm was born in it.

"The Gift Of Recreation"

Message summary: Today work heartily (yesterday's message) but also make time to experience, in one way or another, the enjoyment of recreation.

Listen to our message on your audio player.

"As for the rich in this present age, charge them not to be haughty, nor to set their hopes on the uncertainty of riches, but on God, who richly provides us with everything to enjoy" (1 Timothy 6:17).

Today I set out to write a message about how people had recreational time in the Bible. The Bible mentions running, wrestling, dancing (though usually referenced as a form of worship), and boxing which may have had a recreational aspect. However it's hard to imagine they didn't have other type of recreational activities. The Bible tells us all we need to know but certainly not all we want to know!

My inspiration for this theme was a result of observing the youth last week enjoying wholesome fun after a hard day's work. When we got back to the base camp each day they still had plenty of energy to play! There's an old saying, "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" which means without time off from work, a person becomes both bored and boring.

The work areas were located down a mountain in a narrow gorge (thus the flooding) while the main base camp was about 16 miles up the mountain on a farm near Hendersonville, NC. For many months a gracious local farmer has allowed the rotating Amish youth groups to use a large barn which had once been used to store apples. Shortly after the storm the Amish made some 160 "tiny homes" in a work area in the barn to provide temporary housing for those who had lost their homes.

Around 6:45 each morning we began with singing, devotions and breakfast before heading down the mountain to the work camp. They had lunch in that area and then back up the mountain for dinner at 6, although some came much later, especially the masons, who had trouble getting the concrete deliveries on time over several days.

After dinner the base camp was abuzz with activity. They played volleyball, wiffleball, spikeball, sang around a campfire and one evening joined with a group of local bluegrass musicians. It seems they went on till after 10 pm and even later for some.

Surely the children in the Bible played, probably similar many of the same games we have today. And in one way or another all ages play. Although after childhood we probably don't say, "Let's go out and play"!

Most of us have many forms of recreation we may enjoy. Yesterday I spoke to Rick, a friend who shared that his 86 year old dad had visited and they played golf for three days in a row.

We both have enjoyed many types of recreation through life although due to age, physical condition and interest we have phased out of some such as playing tennis and cross country skiing.

Our recreational activity in recent years is mostly bike riding and we are working at pickle ball (though not too seriously), though we did buy the paddles, balls and net. Tending to her flowers in both the front, side, and back yard is essentially recreational to Brooksyne and, in my case, lawn care and small DIY projects are also recreational.

Today's Bible verse makes an interesting point. God richly provides us with everything to enjoy. Since the way we use recreation today is not in the context of our Scripture text we'll just have to ask Paul when we get to heaven if he also had recreational activity in mind when he wrote about the things God richly provides for us to enjoy (1 Timothy 6:17)!

Today work heartily (yesterday's message) but also make time to experience, in one way or another, the enjoyment of recreation.

B e encouraged today! Hebrews 3:13

Praying man Daily prayer: Father, as the Scripture says, to everything there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven. We have times of weeping and times of laughing, times of mourning and times of dancing. It is also written that everyone should eat and drink, and enjoy the good of all his labor, for it is a gift from You. Not only is our time of work a gift from You, but also our time of play is important as it is a healthy aspect of our physical development and wholeness as we learn the importance of sportsmanship. We thank You for the refreshment of strength and playfulness it brings among friends as we interact in a different setting and role than that of the workplace. Again, we thank You for richly providing for us that which we can enjoy during our pilgrimage here on earth. Amen.

Today's Suggested Music and Supplemental Resources

"Playing Games"  Watch on YouTube  Luke Garrett  This song came to mind as we considered today's topic but it is not a positive example of recreation. It refers to the soldiers playing games at the foot of the cross.

Tony Barber

Brooksyne's note: Nearly 30 years ago I directed an Easter musical titled, "Playing Games at the Foot of the Cross" at the church we served in Taunton, MA. This song was the featured theme of the musical. Marcia was one of our choir members who was married to a man who was not born again, but Marcia raised her children in the ways of the Lord on her own. Her husband, Tony, attended the musical and following the musical we had an altar call. That evening Tony fully surrendered his life to Jesus. How wonderful it was to see him finally sitting next to Marcia each Sunday. It wasn't too long before I recruited him to sing in the choir as he had a wonderful bass voice and we sure enjoyed seeing him grow in the ways of the Lord. Tony had a heart attack a few years back and went to be with Jesus but Marcia continues to attend the church and serve in many capacities as her love for the Lord has not waned but only grown.

Today we will share some photos of recreational time on our trip last week.

Amish youth singing before breakfast
Early each morning before breakfast everyone gathered for singing, a devotional and prayer.

Almost anytime we were at the main base camp a group would be playing volleyball.

Amish youth with Bluegrass musicians
One night a group of locals gathered on the farm to play Bluegrass music as they do every week. Throughout the evening the youth, along with adults and children, came in the small room to listen. One of the young ladies from the youth group joined in on guitar. Here's a video.

Amish youth around the campfire
As it turned dark one night some of the group gathered around a campfire as their energy was depleting. One is playing a guitar and harmonica at the same time.

Finally today:

Nick at Multnomah Falls, OR
Meanwhile on the other side of the country our friend Nick visited Multnomah Falls in Oregon where we also visited over 25 years ago. The falls attract over two million visitors each year, making it the most-visited natural recreation site in the U.S. Pacific Northwest. Tomorrow we will share some photos of the scenery I saw while in North Carolina last week, including a waterfall, Hickory Nut Falls, which is one of the highest waterfalls east of the Mississippi River.
