"Working Heartily"

Message summary: May you experience the joy of the Lord in your work today!

Listen to our message on your audio player.

"This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it" (Psalm 118:24). “And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men; Knowing that of the Lord ye shall receive the reward of the inheritance: for ye serve the Lord Christ” (Colossians 3:23,24).

Last week I observed a lot of hard work when I went with a group of Amish youth to North Carolina for hurricane relief. One of the observations I made was that these young people actually enjoy working, which is key to a fulfilling life. When we work we are pulling our own weight, being responsible and serving others. Consider how you are serving others in your job.

Scripture issues some politically incorrect warnings on laziness. All of Proverbs 6 beginning with verse 1, "Go to the ant, O sluggard; consider her ways, and be wise". Paul warned against idleness in 2 Thessalonians 3 and specifically writes that believers are to "do their work quietly and to earn their own living" (v.12).

Long ago the acronym "TGIF" was developed (Thank God it’s Friday) to describe the final day of the five day workweek. This common expression insinuates the supposed drudgery of work.

But it is God's will that we recognize each day, including work days, as a gift for which we are to rejoice in and be thankful. "This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it" (Psalm 118:24).

In the second daily Scripture portion the Apostle Paul is addressing slaves. This may be a turnoff to some, but in the text we can learn a very important Biblical principle. Slavery was a common practice throughout much of the Roman world in the New Testament age. Paul was merely addressing conditions as they were, not as an endorsement, but an acknowledgement of reality.

Over time the application of Christian principles led to the abolition of slavery. Consider William Wilberforce; in 1785, he underwent a conversion experience and became an Evangelical Anglican, which resulted in major changes to his lifestyle and a lifelong concern for reform.

Sometimes you may feel like a slave to your boss or employer, but you really know better! If you wish you can walk off the job right now, although there would likely be some very consequential ramifications!

Paul says to these slaves concerning their work, "Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord".  Another version states, “Work at it with all your heart". We should apply these same principles in our work ethic toward our employers. In whatever we do, our work should be "as to the Lord".

Our underlying motivation is the future inheritance we will receive from the Lord. And what is that inheritance; it's our home in heaven that will "never perish, spoil or fade".  When we work with this attitude Scripture teaches us that in some remarkable way it is the Lord Jesus Christ whom we are serving more so than our employer!

Today, remember that your work matters to God. Assuming that you are not involved in a type of work that is Scripturally prohibited, your work and the diligence in which you perform is a means of honoring God. (If your work is immoral God can miraculously provide another job as you take a spiritual stand and commit the matter to Him.)  The very next verse states: “Anyone who does wrong will be repaid for his wrong” (Colossians 3:25).

May you experience the joy of the Lord in your work today!

Praying man Daily prayer: Father, as we do our work heartily unto You we won’t be half-hearted in our service or in our attitudes.  Not only in our service do we want to do our best but we also ask You to keep our attitudes in check and our words uplifting in the work place. Help us to be quick to see another co-worker’s need and respond accordingly. May we not yield to the temptation of finger-pointing and finding fault with others. Prompt us to be faithful in prayer for our employers, supervisors, co-workers, and the business in which we serve. In Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.

Amish group singing at Chimney Rock

A major highlight of the trip was being the first group to tour Chimney Rock State Park since the flood. The park opens officially later this week but the rangers made it possible for the Amish youth to have a special guided tour, surely in part due to their service in the area. After driving up the mountain to a parking area, tourists walk back to a long cave-like tunnel through solid rock and take an elevator thirty stories up to the Chimney Rock lookout point. The Amish youth began to sing in the tunnel and we have a recording that will surely bless you as you listen: "We'll All Be There" Video  (This link will be up all week).

We'll be there, we'll all be there,
On the dawn (morning) of that great and glorious day,
When the saints all gather home,
We'll be there, praise the Lord, we'll all be there.

Today I will share work-site photos from my trip last week to North Carolina with a large Amish youth group assisting in the rebuilding following the devastating damage from the hurricane and flooding last fall. Here is the area where the work was done on a Google map. The image is after the flood. But if you click on street view you can see the thriving tourist town before the flood! Both side of the road had businesses. Now it's hard to imagine anything on the river side.

Here's a video that our friend Nick sent us last week of Amish youth at work with the same program, "Spokes Of Hope" which we worked with last week though this was not our actual youth group.

Roofing team
The storm damaged this roof on a double wide trailer so these youth replaced it entirely. When we pulled up to the site Monday morning the roof was covered with blue tarps, probably since the storm.

93 year old woman
The double-wide trailer was occupied by this 93 year old woman who was evacuated from the flooding last fall on a helicopter (her first flight - and what a flight it was). She was very pleased and thankful for the new roof!

Framing crew
A week-long project for several of the youth, along with Roman, one of the adult chaperones and a skilled carpenter, included working on the Smokehouse BBQ restaurant in Chimney Rock village.  Among my duties was driving the wives and children around so they could see the various work-sites where their husbands and children were. The children just jumped out of the van and went exploring. In the background is Chimney Rock.

These young people were working on the Willow Creek gift store that had been damaged in the tourist village of Chimney Rock.

This mason crew was building a retaining wall at the Bat Cave work camp where Spokes Of Hope, the relief organization that coordinated the work, is based.

Mobile pantry
We met a number of others working at the relief effort, including this mobile truck distributing food items.

Dishwashing team
Work didn't stop at the end of the day at the work-sites for everyone. Teams took turns being on the dish-washing crew at the main base camp where the group slept and ate their breakfast and dinner. Two young Amish sisters in their 20's went along as cooks and did a great job preparing delicious meals for the entire group, feeding nearly 60 people of all ages. Much of the food was donated and there was no lack of nutrition.

Finally today:

Jeff and Linda Reid
Longtime friends Jeff and Linda Reid, whom we came to know and love over 30 years ago in the church we served in New England, surprised us with a visit yesterday afternoon and ate dinner with us. Jeff served on the church board and Linda was a faithful choir member that Brooksyne directed while we served in Taunton, MA. After we moved to Lancaster they also made a major move to live in Maine. They are on the way down to Savannah, Georgia for their grandson's wedding.
