“Then
Nebuchadnezzar
said, ‘Praise
be to the God
of Shadrach,
Meshach and
Abednego, who
has sent His
angel and
rescued His
servants! They
trusted
in Him and defied
the king’s
command and
were willing
to give up
their lives
rather than
serve or
worship any
god except
their own
God’” (Daniel
3:28). A primary heat source for our home is our coal stove, using good old Pennsylvania anthracite coal. I fill the hopper in the back of the stove early each morning and the coal is slowly, automatically fed to the burner. A white hot portion on the burner only about 4x4 inches is generally adequate to keep our entire house warm, although during the very cold periods we do use some electric heat. The stove
has a glass
door on the
front so I can
see the warm
glow and
verify that
it's working.
When I see the
light from a
distant glance
I'm confident
that the heat
is there as
well! I
sure don't
want to let
the fire die
out on a cold
day since it
takes quite a
while for the
coal to reach
the desirable
temperature!
The
godly trio got
into serious
trouble
because they
refused to
compromise a
core
commandment of
God in bowing
down to the 90
foot tall
golden image
Nebuchadnezzar
had set up. There could be no quick escape as the strongest of soldiers bound them and then, before their very eyes they watched these strong soldiers die from the blazing flames that they were about to be thrown into.
Most
importantly
they were not
delivered from
the hot fiery
furnace but
were preserved
through it.
Not a hair on
their head was
singed, their
robes were
unscorched,
their bodies
unharmed and
there was no
smell of smoke
found on them.
(That detail
always
intrigues me).
Wow, that’s a
dramatic and
miraculous
deliverance!
Be encouraged today! Hebrews 3:13

A
pleasant
memory:
Many years ago
when I
pastored a
church in New
England I
preached from
the Faith
Chapter in
Hebrews 11.
Wanting to get
the
congregation
involved I
asked, “What
Old Testament
situation was
the writer
likely
referring to
in verse 34
when he wrote,
‘quenched the
power of
fire?’” An
eager child
correctly
answered,
“Shadrach,
Meshach and
Abednego”. Of
course these
are their very
familiar
Babylonian
names.
Having some Bible College students and graduates in attendance I further probed, “And what were their Hebrew names?” With great excitement Garrison, a boy about 8 years old, immediately raised his hand and with a knowing smile he confidently answered, “Rack, Shak and Bennie.” Now if you have kids or grandkids you’re probably laughing right now as you might recognize these are their nicknames from a popular Veggie Tales story. Hananiah, Mishael, and Azariah were the Hebrew names I was waiting to hear, but Rack, Shak, and Bennie sure drew a lot more attention than the Hebrew names.
I
called Mike
this morning
who is
Garrison's
father. They
still reside
in Taunton,
MA, where we
pastored for
nearly eight
years in the
90's. That
little boy,
Garrison, is
now a medical
doctor!

Note:
In light of
the message
today I
recalled a
verse from my
Scripture
reading early
this morning
that is a
stark contrast
to the firm
stand the
three Hebrew
boys
took.
"Still,
there were
many, even
among the
rulers, who
did believe in
Him. For fear
of the
Pharisees,
however, they
didn't admit
it publicly
lest they be
thrown out of
the synagogue.
For they
loved the
approval of
men more than
the approval
of God"
(John
12:42,43).
