"Faithful And Determined"

Message summary: In the midst of increasing moral confusion we who love God continue to declare with the Psalmist, “I have chosen to be faithful; I have determined to live by Your laws” (Psalm 119:30). Let us, like the Psalmist, be faithful and determined to live by Your laws.

Listen to our message on your audio player.

“Then the LORD said to Moses, ‘Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt’” (Exodus 32:7). “I have chosen to be faithful; I have determined to live by Your laws” (Psalm 119:30).

Moral confusion has certainly increased during our lifetime. Who would have thought 35 years ago (half of my current life) that the fundamental nature of marriage (one man, one woman) and even the clearly evidential truth of two genders (male and female) would be a source of confusion to many. Even the most extreme liberal mind understood this 35 years ago!

Moral confusion is an ancient problem and whenever the compass is ignored the ship drifts aimlessly with the possibility of plunging deep into the raging waters. Is that not a picture of our nation and world and sadly it even infiltrates the church of Christ!

In honor of Sanctity of Life on Sunday Julie Baum spoke to our ABF class. She has served with the ALIGN Life pregnancy services for the past 30 years. Here is a heartbreaking statistic she shared taken from a Care Net* study of 1,038 post-abortive women in PA that 4 in 10 women who have chosen abortion were churchgoers when they chose to end their pregnancy.

Consider today the current practice of determining morality by polling. Polls are taken just about every day for political purposes but are also taken to determine virtually everything these days. How do you feel about abortion, cloning, pornography, illegal drugs, the definition of marriage? The list goes on and on. The majority response to the question becomes the guiding factor as to whether it is right or wrong in our current moral climate. The laws are then written to reflect people’s opinions.

Our first daily verse records God’s instructions to Moses when he was on the mountain. "Go down, because your people, whom you brought up out of Egypt, have become corrupt". In Moses’ absence the people had corrupted themselves with the golden calf and were reveling in immorality and idolatry (Exodus 32).

I wonder what would have happened if a poll was taken among the Israelites regarding their behavior. What percent would have condoned the action?  Probably most of them!

They surely had some pretty good excuses.  Moses had disappeared so the people cried out they had no leadership or an inadequate substitute leader. Morale was at an all-time low. They were bored with nothing else to do. They meant well, and after all Moses’ own brother, Aaron, did nothing to stop them. Instead he actually instructed them in how to go about their act of defiance (vs.2). They enthusiastically responded to his leadership in his brother’s absence. His heart turned away from pleasing the living God and he sought to please the raucous people instead. His actions led to a people who “indulged themselves in pagan revelry” (Exodus 32:6b).

In the midst of the chaotic situation God didn’t instruct Moses to take a poll nor did He judge the people’s attitudes or actions by Aaron’s standards, but by His unchanging holy standards. We who are in leadership must not give Satan an inch or he will become our ruler. The people were severely condemned for their actions and punished accordingly (Exodus 32:19,20).

Today let’s remember that we have a sure standard, not based on ever changing polls but on the unchanging eternal Word of God. Most ignore it or tweak its original message to suit their own desires, but we who love God continue to declare with the Psalmist, “I have chosen to be faithful; I have determined to live by Your laws” (Psalm 119:30). Let us be faithful and determined.

Be encouraged today! Hebrews 3:13

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, Your Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path. I meditate on Your age-old laws; O Lord, for they comfort and guide me. Your principles have been the joyful music of my life throughout the years of my pilgrimage. When I am tempted to wade in raging waters Your Spirit convicts me and brings to my mind Scripture that shows me right from wrong. I have chosen to be faithful to You so I choose to live by Your laws, not by the opinions or preferences of those who choose another way. Through Christ I can do all things. Amen.

* Care Net is a national resource pro-life affiliate of ALIGN Life. A study of post-abortive women in PA revealed that 44% of women have had at least one abortion by the time they are 45 years old. Of those women, 4 in 10 claim to be Christian and were attending church when they chose to end their pregnancy.

Yesterday Ed Berkey, my former district supt. when I lived in New England, called me commenting on the song we featured yesterday: "His Glory and My Good". I had posted that we sang in our church on Sunday. He had enjoyed it and wondered who those young people were. Ed is 98 and still has a radio program!

The group is CityAlight from Australia who have in our view presented many wonderful Christ-honoring songs. Here's their YouTube channel.

I suppose our favorite is "Yet Not I But Through Christ In Me"  Watch on YouTube

Ed's wife, Gladys, went to be with the Lord several years ago and I dedicate this song to him and all who are grieving the home-going of a loved one. "Welcome Home"   Watch on YouTube
