Amazing Grace.
Yesterday I was the driver for a group of six Amish girls returning home from their youth group near Oxford, PA (near the Maryland border). Amish youth groups gather in homes and have a great time together. This one hosted 50 young people and had a barn large enough to play indoor volleyball. I played some pickle-ball in an Amish barn on the way down to pick them up and then met with my longtime friend Mark Pulliam for dinner in Oxford. It was interesting talking to the girls on the way back, although they mostly talked to each other in PA Dutch. They begin attending youth groups at 16 years of age and it is usually where they meet their life mates. My last drop-off was our neighbor's daughter, who just turned 16 and she told me how much she already liked being in her youth group. ![]() Driving through the country in rural Lancaster County yesterday afternoon I passed many large farms like this, often with multi-generational families living in separate but close houses. ![]() Yesterday we heard that Andrew Larrimore passed away on Christmas Day at 96 years of age. He pastored the church I served in Massachusetts for 27 years prior to my tenure. His son Andy remains a friend to this day. This photo was taken in June of 1993 when I assumed the role of pastor. He was retiring and I was starting. When I calculate the numbers I realize that I am now older than he was at the time of this photo. Ecclesiastes 1:4 states, "Generations come and generations go".
Correction:
Brooksyne
stated that
Tirza whom we
wrote about in
yesterday's
message is
going to teach
English
beginning in
January to
students in El
Salvador. She
ran into
Tirza's mother
later that day
and double
checked on
that location
and learned
that she is
going to teach
in Honduras,
rather than El
Salvador.
Brooksyne's
note and
memory: As
we wrote our
message my
memory took me
back to our 16
years of
pastoring in
Northern PA
(St. Marys)
1977-1993. The
custom for
that area was
the week after
Christmas to
visit friend's
and family's
homes though
it was called
"treeing". You
visited, had
some snacks,
but the main
event was
observing
their
Christmas tree
and the opened
gifts that
were piled
underneath.
Family members
did not open
the gift and
put it to use
right away.
For a week (as
best I
remember) it
was folded or
stored neatly
beneath the
tree so others
could see the
gifts received
that year by
family
members. Not
coming from
that
background it
took us awhile
to discipline
ourselves to
do the same
but it was a
great way to
visit with
others during
the special
time of year.
Admittedly
we've gotten
away from that
tradition
after we moved
to New England
and now in
Lancaster
County for
almost 24
years.
