Easter Monday

Romans 4:25 (Hobby Lobby Easter ad)

"He Is Risen Indeed!"

Message summary: Today let us wholeheartedly serve the One who has risen indeed. Let us walk in the power of His resurrected life so that we triumph over evil, boldly assert Biblical doctrine, and cast our hope beyond the grave to eternal life and our own bodily resurrection.

Listen to our message on your audio player.

“The Lord is risen indeed” (Luke 24:34). “He [Jesus] was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification” (Romans 4:25).

Yesterday all around the world the joy-filled truth was proclaimed, “The Lord is risen!” These words were first uttered by the two men who had encountered the risen Christ on the road to Emmaus. Ever since it’s been a declaration of faith that can too easily become a mere cliché on Easter. But it's not a
cliché; the Lord is risen indeed!

The word for “indeed” is translated “true” or “really” in many other versions. The actual underlying Greek word is “ontos” (those who studied philosophy may recall the word “ontology”, which is the study of existence and reality).

“He is risen indeed". These four words express the very bedrock of Christian faith; the literal, bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ is a genuine, historical event validated by many eyewitnesses. It is the core doctrine of the faith once for all entrusted to the church of Jesus Christ for all time.

Reading the New Testament we easily observe the emphasis on the death and resurrection of Christ in the early church. Each gospel ends with this glorious truth and it is a recurring theme through the preaching in Acts and is an oft repeated theme in the epistles. It is powerfully affirmed in the Bible's final book of Revelation. “Fear not, I am the first and the last, and the living one. I died, and behold I am alive forevermore" (Revelation 1:17,18).

Years after the resurrection a mightily transformed Peter reminds his readers, “We did not follow cleverly invented stories when we told you about the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we were eyewitnesses of His majesty".

But today there are many who consider the message of the resurrection of Jesus Christ nonsense. You likely know people who do and there are a number of them who are very forthright in their disbelief, even mocking those who do believe.

C.N Hostetter wrote, “When people have problems with miracles it is not because miracles are unbelievable. The problem is that they have an inadequate view of God".

What is your view of God? Do you believe the literal, bodily resurrection of Jesus Christ is a myth or a historical fact? How does this view impact the way you live your life? For the disciples, many who had some initial struggles in their belief, it resulted in a life-transforming change illustrated by Peter who stood on the Day of Pentecost and boldly proclaimed, “But God raised Him from the dead, freeing Him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on Him” (Acts 2:24).

I ask you again how does this view of the literal resurrection impact your life? Would you be willing to be persecuted or to lay down your life rather than forsake this Biblical teaching? I was struck as I read through the book of Acts that Paul was often brought before the officials with this very charge, including his appearance before the Sanhedrin, “…concerning the hope and resurrection of the dead I am being judged” (Acts 23:6b).

Today let us wholeheartedly serve the risen Lord. Let us walk in the power of His resurrected life so that we triumph over evil, boldly assert Biblical doctrine, and cast our hope beyond the grave to eternal life and our own bodily resurrection.

I know that my Redeemer lives!
What joy this blest assurance gives!
He lives, He lives, who once was dead;
He lives my ever-living head!

B e encouraged today! Hebrews 3:13

Praying manDaily prayer: Jesus, Your divine mission on earth ultimately led to Your obedience of death on the cross. But on the third day You defied the curse of death and rose to life again. In the historical records we read that Your resurrected body was identified by the nail scars visible in Your hands and Your feet; nails that were driven into Your innocent body by our sinful hearts, for when we were dead in our trespasses and sins You died for us, the ungodly. How undeserving we are of Your sacrificial death which brought about the Father’s gift of eternal life. In humblenes s of heart we receive this tremendous gift with gratitude and rejoicing as we choose to live for You. Amen.

Today's Suggested Music and Supplemental Resources

Easter choir

Brooksyne was part of the Calvary Church Choir which led our congregation in worship yesterday. Standing on the front row, far right, is Ross Weidman. He had a serious stroke last year, on this very day, April 20th. Today was his first time to be back singing with the choir. He has had major challenges with his speech, balance, etc. but he has worked very hard to enable his recovery along with his very devoted wife, Nancy. (Ross is fellow teacher in the same class I teach in.)

"Sunday Is Coming"  Watch on YouTube  Our service opened yesterday with this powerful song . This is essentially a ballad telling the story of Christ's life. We especially like this portion:

Following this line, "They laid Him down inside that grave"

But that wasn't the end
That wasn't the end
That wasn't the end
Let me tell you what happened next

Note: This video will also continue for the remainder of the service if you care to join us for church yesterday!

Musing on once new but now old Resurrection songs which have spoken to our hearts through the years brings to mind:

"Rise Again"  Watch on YouTube  Dallas Holm

And in case you didn't sing these in your church yesterday:

Late yesterday afternoon I took a solo bike ride along the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail from Marietta to Bainbridge. Brooksyne sang in all three services and then after preparing and serving our Easter meal she needed some rest! I always enjoy sharing my photos and giving readers a glimpse of our neck of the woods.

Marietta cherry trees
There is a mile long stretch of cherry trees along Front Street in Marrieta beside the railroad tracks. These are the same kind of cherry trees that are in Washington DC.

Cherry tree blossom
The individual cherry blossoms are as pretty as any flower!

Rosie on bike
Rosie seems to enjoy riding along with me. I base that upon her excitement when I say, "Want to go on a bike ride?" She starts jumping up and down and then starts climbing my pant leg as if to say, "Don't leave without me!"

Railroad bridge
The scene of the greening trees across the Susquehanna River from underneath the arches of this railroad bridge caught my attention.

Trail worship
Worship by the river
I stopped at the park along the river in Bainbridge and this young man was playing "A Thousand Hallelujahs" on his guitar.

Finally today:

Jesus dropped the charges
I don't know what kind of background this man has but his shirt speaks for all of us in one way or another when we place our faith in Christ!
