Good Friday

Remembering Good Friday
To that old rugged cross I will ever be true,
its shame and reproach gladly bear;
then He'll call me some day to my home far away,
where His glory forever I'll share.

"The Roman Centurion"

Note:   During Holy Week we normally focus on the familiar truths in God's redemption plan as we well should. Hopefully, you are feeding on these truths from your personal reading and through your church. In our series this week are considering people during the events of Holy Week that are rather incidental to the main story. But each one, just like each of us, has a story.

Message summary: Today as we consider the old rugged cross let us declare, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God".

Listen to our message on your audio player.

"When the centurion, who was standing right in front of Him, saw the way He breathed His last, he said, 'Truly this man was the Son of God!'" (Mark 15:39). "Now when the centurion saw what had taken place, he praised God, saying, 'Certainly this man was innocent!'" (Luke 23:47).

Today we especially remember the greatest sacrifice where "on an old rugged cross God's dearest and best for a world of lost sinners was slain".

All this week we have been considering those who surveyed the cross, that is, those who witnessed the events of Calvary. When you consider all four gospels you discover there are several individuals that have a life changing story to share.

Roman centurion at cross "During the New Testament era, a Roman centurion was a professional military officer commanding a platoon of troops called a “century.” This could be anywhere from nearly one hundred to several hundred men". (from gotquestions.org)

The Roman Centurion was likely the very closest in physical proximity to Christ when He died. Our first daily text states at the time of Christ's death this centurion "was standing right in front of Him".

We know nothing about this man's background or what became of him following the events of Calvary. However, it's very hard to believe that he wouldn't have been a very changed man after that which he witnessed.

His words recorded in Scripture reveal that he witnessed something very significant when he "saw the way He (Christ) breathed His last".

Based on a careful reading of the text it would seem that he's referring to that which he witnessed upon Christ's final breath. The scene must have been so moving that it prompted a remarkable proclamation of faith and praise. Immediately after Christ breathed His last he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!" Luke's account states, "he praised God, saying, 'Certainly this man was innocent!'".

This Roman centurion has the distinction of having the first words recorded in Scripture following Christ's death.

His profession of faith is very similar to what Peter affirmed concerning Christ when He asked the disciples, "But who do you say that I am?" Simon Peter answered, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:15,16).

That Jesus is the "Son of God" is a central tenet in the Christian faith. It's interesting to study this phrase beginning in Acts and through the Epistles and in the book of Revelation.

Today, especially, as we remember Christ's sacrificial death let us declare, "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God"! And let us live in such a way that we help others discover who He is, what He has done, and the salvation He offers to all who come to Him.

B e encouraged today! Hebrews 3:13

Praying manDaily prayer:  Father, as the Roman Centurion was an eyewitness to Jesus' crucifixion right up to his final breath he was moved and convinced that Christ was more than human, since he declared, "Truly this man was the Son of God!" Though we were not eye witnesses of that most important historical event, through the testimony of many witnesses and through the work of Your Holy Spirit, we too can declare present tense, "Truly, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God". Because we have the full record in Scripture we can rejoice even before we commemorate Christ's death on Good Friday because we know He rose again and ever lives to make intercession for us. Thank You for Your abundant mercy and grace lavished upon us! Amen.

Additional study note: "The Roman centurion is not one you would have expected to be impressed. He was there but casually; had probably only been in Jerusalem a few days. His deities were those whose chief characteristic was power. Meekness and lowliness were, by his people, considered failings, not virtues. He had probably everything about religion to learn; and yet he follows the dying thief in the path of faith and of salvation. He would not mean, perhaps, by his exclamation, all that Peter or Paul would have meant; but he meant that Christ was more than mere man; that God was in Him; that whatever claims He made we should reverently admit them. Such a converting power is there in the mere sight of Christ. We have but to fix our honest gaze on Him and we begin to believe upon Him and to become like Him." (R. Glover in the Biblical Illustrator)

"Nothing But The Blood"   Watch on YouTube   Travis Cottrell · Brooke Voland

"The Old Rugged Cross"  Watch on YouTube   Redeemed Quartet   In 1913 it was performed for the first time in its entirety at the Pokagon Methodist Episcopal Church in Pokagon, Michigan. It was here in the same building, 109 years later, that we filmed our version of the treasured Gospel anthem.

George Bennard was a traveling evangelist from Iowa around the turn of the century. At a revival meeting in 1912 he was interrupted, ridiculed, harassed and heckled by young people mocking the cross. This caused George to contemplate  the meaning of the cross, and strengthen his resolve to “cherish the old rugged cross”, though “despised by the world”. Spending many hours in study, prayer and meditation, he at last could say, “I saw the Christ of the cross as if I were seeing John 3:16 leave the printed page, take form and act out the meaning of redemption.”

Sight & Sound's production of JESUS will be streaming for free over Easter Weekend. Go to this site.  Here's the sample trailer. Sight and Sound is located right here in Lancaster County.

Yesterday afternoon I went over to the Old Windmill Farm where Jesse and Anna had more guests present than I have ever seen. Many of them were orthodox Jews who came down from New York and New Jersey during Passover. I enjoyed visiting with several and learned that although people are curious about the Amish way of life, many just want to be on a real farm.

For newer readers Jesse and Anna were our neighbors shortly after we moved to Lancaster County nearly 25 years ago. They were newly married when we met them and now have seven children. Through the years we have become very close friends. About eight years ago they converted their dairy farm to a tourist farm, the Old Windmill Farm, and it has become one of the most popular attractions in Lancaster County. I recall when we were with them discussing the new project and coming up with name. Since there is a prominent windmill we first considered naming it the "Windmill Farm" but that was already taken as a domain by a farm in England so we tried "Old Windmill Farm" and the rest is history!

Barrel ride on Old Windmill Farm
I took a couple of turns driving the ever-popular barrel train. Anita, the main driver, sent me this photo. She and her daughter are great friends of the farm and have assisted Jesse in various way in promotion, especially their Facebook page. Anita's daughter is a cast member of Sight and Sound. She alo manages to get in a solid witness for the Lord on the page such as a post this morning.

Collie
These guests were very happy to pet a very compliant Kiera, the farm's collie. Kiera is accustomed to being around people. But she knows me from our many visits to the farm and when I came up she arose to greet me whimpering excitedly in recognition.

Holding a goat
This little girl was sure happy holding a goat.
I saw lots of smiles yesterday.

This little girl was sure happy bottle feeding the calves!
