"A Good Man"

Message summary: Today we consider good men like Barnabas and my cousin Dub. In what ways are you demonstrating that you are a good person?

Listen to our message on your audio player.

"When he (Barnabas) came and saw the grace of God, he was glad, and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose, for he was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith" (Acts 11:23,24).

Last Thursday Ester and I attended a Memorial Service for my cousin, George Steincross, whom family and friends called Dub. He was the youngest child and only son of my Mom's only brother, Uncle Gentry. Dub was a nickname his older sister, Mazie, gave him when he was a baby and it stuck for life.

Dub was a Baptist preacher, a kind man andan encourager. As a young preacher he served a church in Alabama at the time of segregation and faced persecution when he took a stand against it.

He was active in sports and became the defacto chaplain of the local college's basketball team. Dub invited the team to attend a concert at the church which included several black players. As a result he faced opposition from church leadership for inviting them, received harassing phone calls, and got his house egged. He was asked to resign but, out of principle, he refused to do so and was fired. He went on to establish another church in that town that exists to this day. This is from the church's website:

"University Baptist Church was chartered on October 3, 1971. Rev. George “Dub” Steincross, formerly of Montevallo First Baptist Church, was named the founding pastor. His goal was simply to follow the love of Jesus wherever it may lead. And in the summer of ‘71, it led him and 225 others to step out and start a new Baptist church, which would be dedicated to the grace of God for all people, regardless of skin color."

Today let us examine Barnabas, a Bible character well known for being an encourager, like Dub. Coincidentally, he also went by his nickname, Barnabas. His given name was Joseph but he received the nickname Barnabas from the apostles. Very few, even diligent Bible students, would likely even recall his given name. Barnabas means “Son of Encouragement” and he is indeed one of the great encouragers of Scripture.

Due to persecution the message of Christ was spreading way beyond Jerusalem, Judea and Samaria by Acts 11. A group of disciples had reached Antioch in Syria (see here for map) telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus. “The Lord’s hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord” (Acts 11:21).

When news of this reached church headquarters in Jerusalem they promptly dispatched Barnabas to the scene. The Scripture describes him as a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith” (Acts 11:24).

What an honor to be described as a "good man".

The daily verse goes on to succinctly describe what Barnabas encountered in Antioch, along with his response.  It is a good lesson for encouragers of any generation. “When he came and saw the grace of God, he was glad, and he exhorted them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose” (Acts 11:23).

Let’s examine this description phrase by phrase:

1) "When he (Barnabas) came and saw the grace of God": Scripture doesn’t specify just what Barnabas saw. The NIV words it, “evidence of the grace of God”. That’s wonderful isn’t it?  We hope you have seen evidence of the grace of God in fellow believers. We also hope that we abundantly display that evidence in our lives!
2) “He was glad” – What makes you glad today? Ask yourself, does it have eternal worth?
3) "He exhorted (encouraged) them all to remain faithful to the Lord with steadfast purpose". That’s how Luke concisely describes Barnabas’ ministry as an encourager.

Today consider good men like Barnabas and Dub who have been a positive influence in your life and give thanks to God for them. In what ways does the goodness of God spill out from your life into the lives of others?

Be encouraged today! Hebrews 3:13

Praying manDaily prayer: Father, we have continuous evidence of Your grace in every area of our life including that of our fellow brothers and sisters who have forsaken the world and surrendered their all to You. May we be eager to reveal Your grace to others as You continue the lifelong work of transforming us into the likeness of Your Son, Jesus Christ. We seek to be faithful to You, Lord, with steadfast purpose, full of the Holy Spirit and of faith so that Your goodness is seen in our attitudes and actions toward others. Amen.

Dub & Joy
Dub and his wife Joy at one of our annual family reunions.

Cousins at service for Dub
Seven of the original sixteen cousins attended Dub's service. Four have died and several were unable to attend because of health. Mazie, in the middle, is Dub's older sister who gave him the name "Dub".

With Janet and Tim at Jack Stack's BBQ
While in the KC area we had dinner at Jack Stack's BBQ one night with a cousin from my Dad's side, Janet and her husband Jim. She is the daughter of my dad's only beloved sister Mary.

KC Union Station
While in the Kansas City area we visited Union Station built in 1914 which has been renovated and is now a tourist destination. As a child we went out of this station to travel by train to California to visit my older brother Mike and his family.

KC airport pet relief area
For those traveling with pets this is the pet relief area at the Kansas City airport. I guess you hose it down afterwards but it's still pretty yucky in my humble opinion.

Jim and Dorothy cutting 70th anniversary cake
Yesterday afternoon the Lapp family joined us in celebrating Jim and Dorothy's 70th wedding anniversary at Trillium Place. Ester captured this photo as they began to cut the sheet cake. Jim and Dottie are 90 years old and continue to have a vibrant faith and an encouraging spirit.

Pastor Chrichton 104 years old!
While at the Trillium facility we also greeted Pastor Crichton who celebrated his 104th birthday last week. For many years he was the pastor of Calvary Church though many years before we began attending.
