Hallelujah,
You have
overcome, You
have overcome Our choir
sings a
powerful song
with a moving
message of
truth titled,
"Victor's
Crown".
Victory and
overcoming are
based on the
same Greek
word, νίκα
(nike). It's
the same word
at the root of
one of my
favorite
phrases in
Romans 8:37, "In
all these
things we are
more than
conquerors
through Him
who loved us".
"More than
conquerors"
translates a
single Greek
word,
ὑπερνικῶμεν
(hypernikōmen).
There are many
people dealing
with chronic
disabilities
that I have
taught to say,
"I am a
hypernikōmen",
including
Jimmy who
deals with
Tourette
syndrome. Our daily verse is a passage we both memorized as young Christians. This verse is so rich in meaning and has often brought us assurance when we especially needed it. We have quoted it often in our ministry to others. However, in examining our use through the years, we have often focused on the earlier phrases in the verse: "These things I have spoken to you". This was a message Jesus shared with His disciples during the hours just prior to His arrest, trial and death. In fact this verse is Jesus' last recorded words before His high priestly prayer recorded in John 17. "so that in Me you may have peace". Jesus said this just before the disciples would enter into one of the most excruciating periods of their lives, a time absolutely not conducive to peace! "In the world you have tribulation". What a forthright statement, hardly a source of encouragement it would seem! It occurs to me how often we speak of tribulation in regard to relatively trivial matters such as a leaking toilet. But the types of tribulation the disciples encountered, along with millions of believers throughout church history and in our own age, have included suffering and death. "but take courage". Various versions translate this, "be of good cheer" (KJV), "but be courageous [be confident, be undaunted, be filled with joy]" (Amplified), "Be courageous!" (HCSB). What a blessed word this must have been in fortifying the disciples' faith (and ours). However, we
focus today on
the final
phrase in our
text, "I
have overcome
the world".
Note that
Jesus is
speaking in
the past
tense.
Although His
suffering and
death were
imminently
before Him He
states "I
have overcome
the world".
What
tremendous
assurance is
stated in
Jesus' words
regarding His
Father's
redemptive
plan that
brought about
His eternal
purpose.
At
the cross the
work was
finished
You were buried in the ground But the grave could not contain You For You wear the Victor's crown

I
spotted this
curious pig
looking out
the window as
I pulled in
near
Campbelltown,
PA yesterday
to take his
photo. (Note:
It's a fake
pig!)
Last
week we shared
some photos
from the bike

Yesterday I
picked up
Brooksyne's
bike I had
taken over for

snapped this

there are 4 or
5 techs
working in
this

This
week I am
transporting
Amish teachers
to and from
school.
Brooksyne
joined me and
visited with
the school
teacher
inside. The
setting is
similar to a
rural school I
can imagine my
grandparents
going to. Even
when we
attended
school
beginning in
the 60's our
schools didn't
look like
this. But then
as baby
boomers there
were several
classes for
each grade in
our modern
schools. The
photo shows
the types of
character
reinforcement
that covers
the walls,
"dump your
troubles, dig
for
happiness!" Brooksyne's
Note: The
Amish teachers
over the years
have permitted
me to take
photos of
their
classroom once
the children
have departed,
so I took
several of our
neighboring
school two
days ago. The
teacher asked
me, "Did you
attend a one
room school
house?" It
rather
surprised me,
but then she
backed off and
second guessed
herself, "Oh,
you probably
aren't old
enough to have
attended a one
room
schoolhouse."
She was right
but I
mentioned to
her that my
mother did in
Frazer, CO,
and had warm
memories of
her time in
that school.
