" Having A Low Center Of Gravity"

Message summary:   In life we need to keep a low spiritual center of gravity, that is, being grounded in God's truth.

Listen to our message on your audio player.

"So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall!" (1 Corinthians 10:12). "Be very careful, then, how you live" (Ephesians 5:15). "Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers" (1 Timothy 4:16). "But God's firm foundation stands" (2 Timothy 2:19).

Corn fodder bales on wagon

As we drive through our agricultural area we continue to see the harvest. Following the grain corn harvest a baler comes through the fields and bales the remaining dried stalks to use as fodder, which will be used as bedding for animals. Driving onto the Old Windmill Farm several days ago I saw the wagon load of corn fodder in the photo above.

This brings to mind an experience about 25 years ago when I was helping my father-in-law with hay harvest on a farm in Arkansas. We were also using the large round bales like in the photo. I enjoyed operating the loader that picked up the bales of hay in the field and loaded them on the trailer. Farm work was fun!

But my father-in-law corrected me regarding the way I was using the machine to handle the bales. I was picking them up with the skid loader and then lifted them up to load the trailer as I crossed the field. He pointed out that this would make the loader have a high center of gravity and make it easy to tip over.

The lesson he taught me was this: when moving the bales you should always have a low center of gravity to safely move them. All these years later this prompts a spiritual lesson. In life we need to keep a low spiritual center of gravity, that is, being grounded in God's truth.

Note the two Scripture portions used this morning.

"Be very careful, then, how you live". John Stott writes:

"Everything worth doing requires care. We all take trouble over the things which seem to us to matter—our job, our education, our home and family, our hobbies, our dress and appearance. So as Christians we must take trouble over our Christian life. We must treat it as the serious thing it is."

"Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers."  I memorized this verse at the time I was ordained in 1979. I never want to forget this vital truth, nor fail to persevere.

Keeping a low spiritual center of gravity involves:

1) Love for God's Word: "Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day" (Psalm 119:97).

2) Faithful in prayer: "And pray in the spirit on all occasions, with all kinds of prayers and requests" (Ephesians 6:18).

3) Obedience to God's Commands: "Anyone who listens to the word but does not do what it says is like someone who looks at his face in a mirror and, after looking at himself, goes away and immediately forgets what he looks like" (James 1:23,24).

4) Practicing the Fruit of the Spirit: "But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control" (Galatians 5:22,23).

Let's pay close attention to our spiritual center of gravity, seeing that we are living securely today anchored in God's firm foundation.

Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13

Praying man Daily prayer: Father, there are so many snares and traps the devil has set for us that we must carefully align our lives with Your Word to keep our life and doctrine centered on Your will. It is like a lamp unto our feet and a light unto our path that shines in the dark places where Satan has strategically placed his traps with the intention of destroying our relationship with You. As we follow Your doctrine closely and persevere in it, we will save ourselves and those whom we seek to influence for the Kingdom of God. Keep us faithful, we pray in the name of Jesus. Amen.

Early yesterday morning we drove up to the Big Valley (also known as Kishacoquillas Valley) about 70 miles northwest of us (straight line) but a longer drive due to the mountain ridges. The valley is about 25 miles long and some 3 miles wide with distinct mountain ridges on each side. See here on Google map.

RT 322
On the way up we were on Rt 322 along the Juniata River, one of the prettiest drives in PA with the orange, red, yellow, brown and crimson leaves adding spectacular at every turn. The brilliant sun infiltrating the trees gave the appearance of bright Christmas lights being strategically strung amidst the leaves on the branches.

One suspender Amish man
We went to the Farmer's Market in Belleville and purchased a 1/2 gallon of apple cider from this young Amish man who told me he had made it the day before with apples from his orchard. He's wearing just one suspender, an interesting feature of this branch of Amish, used to distinguish them from other Amish groups. We don't have that branch of Amish here in Lancaster County. Just my opinion:  it seems like wearing only one suspender would make a person feel a bit lop-sided when going about his duties throughout the day!

Big Valley yellow buggy
In our area we have black buggies (Mennonite) and gray buggies (Amish) The Big Valley also has yellow and white buggies. Conversing with this friendly 90 year old Amish man I learned that it was his grandson that sold me the cider. He makes these racks used by quilters.

Big Valley white buggy
The white buggies are used by the Nebraska Amish, the most conservative of the Big Valley Amish groups. Notice the blue kerosene lanterns attached at the front for light at night!

Big Valley scooter
Riding on the back roads this Amish mother made room for her son on a scooter. Here is some information about the Big Valley.

Big Valley from Jacks Mountain ridge
We returned home by crossing the Jacks Mountain ridge on the south side. State College (Penn State) is essentially across the ridge on the north side seen in the distance.

Back home in Lancaster County a large pile of fodder bales is stacked near our home on Carmany Road.
