"One Little Ewe Lamb" Message summary: Today's verse is a convicting illustration used by a bold prophet to a wayward king.

It used to eat of his morsel and drink from his cup and lie in his arms, and it was like a daughter to him. Now there came a traveler to the rich man, and he was unwilling to take one of his own flock or herd to prepare for the guest who had come to him, but he took the poor man's lamb and prepared it for the man who had come to him" (2 Samuel 12:2-4). Sunday afternoon following our church service we headed over to the Old Windmill Farm to eat dinner with Jesse and Anna Ruth and the children. When we drove in we saw Sarah Beth, their youngest daughter, playing with a calico farm kitten and a two week old ewe (pronounced yew) lamb they had just purchased Friday evening at the Green Dragon farmer's market. A ewe is a female sheep. A ewe lamb is usually unweaned. You would think the kitten and ewe had been together since birth, neither showing any fear of the other. Of course Brooksyne had to hold them both as seen in our lead photo. The little ewe lamb quickly attached herself to the family and the little ones want to keep her in the house. Anna Ruth was not too keen on the idea but has a soft place in her heart for the children and gave in, especially after the children found some extra diapers to fit the ewe! When she is weaned she will go back to the barn where she will meet the expectations of tourists who want to see a baby lamb during an Old Windmill Farm tour. Most people enjoy visiting a farm where there are sheep. They're not as playful as goats but they're still an interesting animal to observe. Today's verse is a convicting illustration used by a bold prophet to a wayward king. Can you recall the prophet and king? Before we identify the prophet, Brooksyne recalled the following story about a lamb with a powerful spiritual lesson:
Every
once in a
while, an ewe
will give
birth to a
lamb and
reject it.
There are many
reasons she
may do this.
If the lamb is
returned to
the ewe, the
mother may
even kick the
poor animal
away. Once a
ewe rejects
one of her
lambs, she
will never
change her
mind.
These little
lambs will
hang their
heads so low
that it looks
like something
is wrong with
their necks.
Their spirit
is broken.
These lambs
are called
"bummer
lambs". Unless
the shepherd
intervenes,
that lamb will
die, rejected
and alone. So,
do you know
what the
shepherd does?
He brings the
rejected lamb
into his
dwelling,
feeds it by
hand, and
ensures its
warmth near
the fireplace.
Wrapping it in
blankets, he
cradles it
against his
chest,
allowing the
lamb to sense
his heartbeat.
When the lamb
gains
sufficient
strength, he
reintegrates
it into the
field
alongside the
rest of the
flock.
But that sheep
never forgets
how the
shepherd cared
for him when
his mother
rejected him.
When the
shepherd calls
for the flock,
guess who runs
to him first?
That is right,
the bummer
sheep. He
knows his
voice
intimately.
It is not that
the bummer
lamb is loved
more, it just
knows
intimately the
one who loves
it.
It's not that
it is loved
more, it just
believes it
because it has
experienced
that love one
on one.
So many of us
are bummer
lambs,
rejected and
broken. But He
is the good
Shepherd. He
cares for our
every need and
holds us close
to His heart
so we can hear
His heartbeat.
We may be
broken but we
are deeply
loved by the
Shepherd.

Well, back
to our opening
illustration.
The prophet
was Nathan and
the king was
David
following his
adulterous
dalliance with
Bathsheba and
the
consequences
that followed!
(Many of you
already knew
that.) When
David heard
the story
he made no
connection at
all to his own
sin: "Then
David's anger
was greatly
kindled
against the
man, and
he said to
Nathan, 'As
the Lord
lives, the
man who
has done this
deserves to
die, and he
shall restore
the lamb
fourfold,
because he did
this thing,
and because he
had no pity'”.
