O God, when joy and tragedy collide And loss reminds us life is but a sigh From everlasting, You are God
And
all our days
are held
within Your
hands
Your perfect love and favor have no end We rest within the wisdom of Your plan Everlasting God
As we live through the tumultuous waves of life's ups and downs awaiting our time of transition to heaven, we need to regularly recall the truths of holy Scripture. They give us perspective and assurance. Today we consider Psalm 90 that was written by Moses. In this phrase he looks back to eternity past , "From everlasting to everlasting You are God". "Before the mountains were born or You brought forth the earth and the world, Moses considers the creation account in Genesis 1 and the majestic phrase, "In the beginning". But the "before" describes time before the creation of the heavens and the earth, eternity past. Eternity past is very hard to fathom, actually harder for me than eternity future.
"From
everlasting to
everlasting
You are God".
From
duration
stretching
backward
without limit
to duration
stretching
forward
without limit;
that is, from
eternal ages
to eternal
ages; or,
forever.
This truth is taught abundantly in the Scriptures. It expresses one of God's attributes or characteristics known as His "eternality". Theologically the eternality of God refers to His timeless nature. God has no beginning, and will have no end. This is one of the foundational beliefs of Christianity. Our God surpasses time as we define it here on earth. The Bridgeway Bible Commentary powerfully elaborates and summarizes the entire Psalm:
God
alone is
permanent and
enduring, and
therefore the
only true
security is
found in him
(1-2). Human
life, by
contrast, is
short and
uncertain, and
is brought to
an end as God
decides and
when he
chooses. No
matter how
long a person
lives, even to
a thousand
years, the
number of
years is
insignificant
compared with
the
timelessness
of God (3-6).
Sin has
spoiled human
life and
brought God’s
judgment upon
people in the
form of life’s
troubles and
finally death
(7-10). The
ungodly live
to please
themselves.
They do not
fear God and
do not
consider that
they are
spending their
lives building
up God’s
judgment
against them.
Those who love
God should
therefore seek
God’s wisdom,
so that they
might use
their short
lives in the
best way
possible
(11-12). Since
the psalmist
wants to live
his life
wisely, he
asks for God’s
help. Then
sorrow will be
replaced by
joy, and his
life will
become one of
fruitful
service for
God (13-17).
The
eternal,
almighty God
has revealed
Himself to us
and sent His
only begotten
Son to pay the
price for our
redemption as
fallen
sinners. He
alone is from
everlasting to
everlasting.
Let's praise
Him today and
rest in His
steadfast
care, no
matter the
turbulence of
life we face
on this day or
what lies
ahead in
future
days! He
is forever
God!
Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13

Further
study:
A.W. Pink, a Bible teacher from the last century, wrote on this subject of eternality, which is very difficult to comprehend. Warning: this is very heavy material, but I believe it will bless you if you mentally trudge through it!
"In
the beginning,
God" (Genesis
1:1). There
was a time, if
'time' it
could be
called, when
God, in the
unity of His
nature (though
subsisting
equally in
three Divine
Persons),
dwelt all
alone. 'In the
beginning,
God.' There
was no heaven,
where His
glory is now
particularly
manifested.
There was no
earth to
engage His
attention.
There were no
angels to sing
His praises;
no universe to
be upheld by
the word of
His power.
There was
nothing, no
one, but God;
and that, not
for a day, a
year, or an
age, but 'from
everlasting.'
During
eternity past,
God was alone:
self-contained,
self-sufficient,
self-satisfied;
in need of
nothing.
Had a
universe, had
angels, had
human beings
been necessary
to Him in any
way, they
would also
have been
called into
existence from
all eternity.
The creating
of them when
He did added
nothing to God
essentially.
'He changes
not' (Malachi
3:6),
therefore His
essential
glory can be
neither
augmented nor
diminished.
God was under
no constraint,
no obligation,
no necessity
to create.
That He chose
to do so was
purely a
sovereign act
on His part,
caused by
nothing
outside
Himself,
determined by
nothing but
His own mere
good pleasure;
for He
'worketh all
things after
the counsel of
His own will'
(Ephesians
1:11). That He
did create was
simply for His
manifestative
glory. God is
no gainer even
from our
worship. He
was in no need
of that
external glory
of His grace
that arises
from His
redeemed, for
He is glorious
enough in
Himself
without that.
What was it
that moved
Him? It was,
as Ephesians
1:5 tells us,
'according to
the good
pleasure of
His
will'."
What
does it mean
that God is
eternal?

Sunday
evening Mollie
sat in the
front yard
watching her
last sunset as
Ester snapped
this photo.
Three months
shy of her
fourteenth
birthday,
Mollie was
besieged by
joint pain,
especially in
her back legs
and hips. She
was also prone
to falling.
Our house has
three levels
of steps so
that was a
major factor
in our
decision as
she often fell
down while
climbing
steps. Last
evening she
was tenderly
put to rest. ![]()
Ester
was so excited
when Mollie
joined our
family at two
months of age.
She had wanted
her own dog
for several
years so we
agreed that
she could have
one for her
22nd
birthday.
So in March of
2011 we picked
up a 2 month
border collie
mix from our
local animal
shelter. Look
carefully and
you'll see
Roxie, our
first
long-term dog
here in
Lancaster
County looking
on. Roxie
lived for 15½
years.
![]() Mollie had remarkable athletic abilities and determination in her youth and up to just a year or two ago that could not be deterred. She eventually got the ring every time. Mollie loved to play frisbee. Actually it was a rather one way game, I toss and she catches! (She never learned to toss.) Our favorite was the long game; that is, I went out in our large front lawn and tossed the frisbee as far as I could and she ran after it a. With a big leap she caught it in midair. I'd shout, "You are quite the athlete" as she ran back to me clinching the frisbee with her teeth as she prepared for another go at it. She insisted on chewing a hole in the middle so we went through many frisbees! We'd search long and hard for durable ones that she could not chew through but she won in the end and we never found a frisbee that could withstand her determination to chew through it.
