A
neighboring
school visited
the Amish
school where
we attended
the children's
Christmas
program
yesterday. It
must have been
fun to arrive
on a long farm
wagon and here
they are ready
to depart. As
we prepared to
leave in our
vehicle we
enjoyed
watching the
children pull
the blanket
over their
heads as
though it was
freezing
outside. But
it was
actually a
very mild
winter day in
the 40's and
probably felt
like the 50's
in the
sun.

there were
shepherds
living out in
the fields
nearby,
keeping watch
over their
flocks at
night. An
angel of the
Lord appeared
to them, and
the glory of
the Lord shone
around them,
and they were
terrified. But
the angel said
to them, 'Do
not be afraid.
I bring you
good news that
will cause
great joy for
all the
people. Today
in the town of
David a Savior
has been born
to you; He is
the Messiah,
the Lord'"
(Luke 2:8-11). The first Noel the angel did say Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay: In fields where they lay keeping their sheep On a cold winter’s night that was so deep. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel Born is the King of Israel.
Today let’s turn in faith to Christ and, even in the midst of our burdens, remember the following important truth: The God who has taken care of our greatest need will also take care of our every need! Then let us all with one accord Sing praises to our heavenly Lord, That hath made heaven and earth of nought, And with His blood mankind has bought. Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel, Born is the King of Israel.
Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13

Note:
This is one of
the songs the
Amish children
concluded the
program with
yesterday
afternoon. As
they were
singing my
mind wandered
back about
twenty years
ago when I
wrote a skit
using the song
"Carry the
Light" for the
children of a
church in York
County where
Stephen was
their interim
pastor for
about a year.
I dressed up
like an old
woman (back
then it
required a
gray wig - now
I wouldn't
need one).
Sitting all
alone I was
very lonely on
Christmas and
then a little
boy appeared
at my door and
in his hand
was a bouquet
of flowers. I
can't remember
the rest of it
but I tried to
capture the
message of
this song,
"Carry the
Light".

Yesterday
we were
invited to a
Christmas
program at a
Amish one room
school in
eastern
Lancaster
County. This
is our view
coming in
before the
program. We've
been invited
to another
Amish school
program today
and were
invited to yet
another school
in our own
neighborhood
on Friday
(though we
have a
conflict in
our chaplaincy
role and are
unable to
attend).

Yesterday
the children
sang songs,
performed
numerous
skits, recited
poems and
brought many
smiles and
laughter to
the parents,
toddler
siblings,
grandparents,
the visiting
Amish school
students from
other schools
and to those
who were
non-Amish that
attended (I
think there
were two
others besides
Stephen and
myself.)
The little
room was
packed. The
children do a
fantastic job
with their
memorization
skills (about
22 attend).
Many of our
readers would
enjoy seeing
some photos or
a video but of
course we
respect their
wishes and
refrain from
doing so. It
really is a
special
experience.

Leaving
the school
after the
program we
followed the
wagon through
Intercourse,
PA. The boys
in the back
were gesturing
for me to blow
my horn, which
would hardly
be impressive
like a big
truck.
Hearing the
loud sound of
the rolling
steel wheels
on the road
brought a
distinct
sound!

On
the way home
we passed this
Amish buggy
lot near
Bird-in-Hand,
PA. As Henry
Ford once said
regarding the
Model T, "Any
color the
customer
wants, as long
as it’s
black".
I
wonder if
potential
buyers kick
the wheels?

On
the way to the
program we
stopped to
walk-through
Vallorbs, a
company we had
served for
fourteen years
as their
chaplains. In
the last
several years
we have scaled
back from
serving over
ten companies
to our present
three in four
locations. But
we still like
to get back
and visit
periodically
and the
employees seem
quite pleased
and surprised
to see us. We
also visited a
former company
on Wednesday
and plan to do
so today as
well.
Resources
for
Christmas Celebrations
(We
will leave these resources posted below our daily
messages through Christmas)
Each year we share several online resources that we have used over the years and that may be a blessing to families and churches during this Christmas season. "In Remembrance of Me" pdf This is a passion-filled Scripture reading for two adults. Brooksyne and I have used this reading with great receptivity during Christmas Eve services many years. We suggest, if possible, a musical background as the message is read. It is also a great lead-in to a Communion service. It should be thoroughly practiced and read with great expression. "When Christ Was Born" pdf This is an adaptation to the tune of "How Great Thou Art". It's a great song to sing as a congregation since most are familiar with and love the tune. Responsive Christmas Scripture readings for church or family: John 1:1-18 pdf "O Come Let Us Adore Him" pdf My First Christmas In Heaven This is a blessed reminder for all who lost a loved one this year. We first posted this when my Mom died in 2005. Christmas Knowledge Test Test yourself to see how well you know the Christmas story! After you finish there is a link to test key.
