Today's daily
encouragement
message (and
the previous
seven) are
developed from
a study I
prepared for
our Crossroads
Adult Bible
Fellowship on
Sunday,
November 17
based on
teaching from
2 Timothy
4:1-8. This is
the final
message from
that study. Message summary: Today we will consider what is stored up for us in heaven: "the crown of righteousness". Listen to our message on your audio player. "Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved His appearing" (2 Timothy 4:8). Yesterday in our church service the last song we sang together was the majestic hymn, "Crown Him With Many Crowns". The theme of our service was about persecuted Christians, a condition Paul was enduring as he wrote our daily text as he is coming to the end of his life. The song calls us to worship in light of eternity, for "Thy praise shall never, never fail throughout eternity". Today's
message
concludes our
study of 2
Timothy 4:1-8
with a
tremendous
assurance Paul
had of a most
certain
reward,
"Henceforth
there is laid
up for me the
crown of
righteousness,
which the
Lord, the
righteous
judge, will
award to me on
that day".
In
the previous
verses he
candidly
states, "the
time of my
departure is
near" and
testifies, "I
have fought
the good
fight, I have
finished my
course, I have
kept the
faith" (2
Timothy
4:6,7). What a
peace-filled
resolve these
words reveal
for a man soon
to face a
martyr's
death. We pray
for grace that
we might also
face our
inevitable
death in such
a way. Paul
gives us
tremendous
incentive in
writing these
five words.
Let's cling to
it today. This
crown is not
for Paul
exclusively
nor does he go
on to say "and
for you also
Timothy", to
whom he was
writing. On that day we will see you shining brighter than the sun On that day we will know you as we lift our voice as one Till that day we will praise you for your never ending grace And we will keep on singing on that glorious day Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13 Stephen & Brooksyne Weber
CS Lewis wrote, "If you read history you will find that the Christians who did the most for the present world were those who thought most of the next. The apostles themselves... the great men who built up the Middle Ages, the English evangelicals who abolished the slave trade, all left their mark on earth, precisely because their minds were occupied with heaven. It is since Christians have largely ceased to think of the other world that they have become so ineffective in this. Aim at heaven and you will get earth 'thrown in.'"
The New Testament mentions eight crowns and here's my homiletic attempt to identify them:
1.
The Crown Of
Righteousness.
"Now there
is in store
for me the
crown of
righteousness,
which the
Lord, the
righteous
Judge, will
award to me on
that day--and
not only to
me, but also
to all who
have longed
for His
appearing" (2
Timothy 4:8).
2. The Victor's Crown. "Similarly, if anyone competes as an athlete, he does not receive the victor's crown unless he competes according to the rules” (2 Timothy 2:5). 3. The Crown Of Life. "Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him” (James 1:12). 4. The Shepherd's Crown. "Be shepherds of God's flock that is under your care, serving as overseers--not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. "And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away" (1 Peter 5:2-4). 5. The Crown for The Persecuted. "Do not be afraid of what you are about to suffer. I tell you, the devil will put some of you in prison to test you, and you will suffer persecution for ten days. Be faithful, even to the point of death, and I will give you the crown of life” (Revelation 2:10). 6. The Soulwinner's Crown. "For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when He comes? Is it not you?" (1 Thessalonians 2:19). 7. The Eternal Crown. "Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training. They do it to get a crown that will not last; but we do it to get a crown that will last forever” (1 Corinthians 9:24,25).
8)
The Casted
Crowns.
"The
twenty-four
elders fall
down before
Him who is
seated on the
throne and
worship Him
who lives
forever and
ever. They
cast their
crowns before
the throne,
saying 'Worthy
are you, our
Lord and God,
to receive
glory and
honor and
power, for you
created all
things, and by
your will they
existed and
were created'"
(Revelation
4:10,11).

What a
powerful song

Special
Thanksgiving Resources
For many years we have offered these resources to families and church leaders to enrich the spiritual impact of the Thanksgiving holiday. We will leave these resources up through Thanksgiving Day. ![]() A Thanksgiving prayer: Written by Joe Sherer, a pastor friend of ours and shared as the benediction at our community Thanksgiving Eve service many years ago. (printable webpage) For those who enjoy written prayers this would be a beautiful prayer to read together at the Thanksgiving table.
