"Demetrius,
Well Spoken By Everyone"

Message summary: We are flooded with lies from every side intended to deceive us, thus discernment is vital. In so many areas I now just assume I am being lied to. At least I start with that premise. Political ads are full of lies. Brooksyne got a text this morning with a blatant lie designed to frighten. Let's consider a man well spoken of by everyone—and even by the truth itself.

"Demetrius is well spoken of by everyone—and even by the truth itself. We also speak well of him, and you know that our testimony is true" (3 John 1:12) .

It's election day here in the USA when our national, as well as other state and local leaders are "chosen". Actually it's been more like election season. Since we live in a swing state we have been flooded with every type of advertising: texts, calls, tv, radio, internet and highway billboards.

In our Adult Bible Fellowship (AKA Sunday School) our class begins with a time of sharing prayer requests. On Sunday Jeff, an earnest quiet man who is a retired electrician, led the opening. We prayed concerning the election and he reminded us of God's sovereignty over the affairs of men by stating, "Whatever happens, the Man on the middle cross still reigns". Can I get an "Amen" for that!

In light of the election I've been musing on the topic of leadership in the Bible. In the Old Testament a great focus is on the lives of the kings who reigned and ultimately led their people.

In the New Testament we have the record of Christ's ministry here on earth and then after His Ascension the story of the early church. References to secular, political leadership are incidental such as Herod's gory demise in Acts 12:20-23.

The focus both in Acts and the Epistles is on Christ's work and the church. For sure there would have been activity in the secular world but it's just not a focus. Church leaders like Peter and Paul are followed but also lots of ordinary people, the kind of people we associate with.

Today let's just consider one of the ordinary people in the New Testament, a fellow  by the name of Demetrius. Actually there are two men in the NT with this name (sort of like today there is more than one Bob, Bill, or Ben), but we will consider the one mentioned later in the New Testament.

We are flooded with lies from every side intended to deceive us, thus discernment is vital. In so many areas I now just assume I am being lied to. At least I start with that premise. Political ads are full of lies. Brooksyne got a text this morning with a blatant lie designed to frighten. I received one that would lead me to a false voting place.

Demetrius is an obscure Bible character whose brief but very informative reference is found in 3 John 1:12: "Demetrius is well spoken of by everyone—and even by the truth itself. We also speak well of him, and you know that our testimony is true". Does anyone you know come to mind with this same description? We can learn from the example of Demetrius as part of the Holy Scriptures according to 2 Timothy 3:16,17.

"Well spoken of by everyone". What a great blessing these words are.  Few people can be described in this way and even fewer politicians!

"And even by the truth itself". This seems to mean he is genuine through and through.

"We also speak well of him". John and other leaders attested to his sound character.

"A nd you know that our testimony is true".  John was confident that those who knew Demetrius would testify to the truthfulness of this testimony.

We end today's message with three challenges:

1) Consider people in your life who are like Demetrius. Let them know how they have enriched your life.

2) Do other people see you like Demetrius?
Especially consider those words, "Well spoken of by everyone" .

3)  Everyone's time of departure will come. Have you made things right with the Lord?

Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13

Praying man Daily prayer: Father, help us to live a life above reproach so that others who look on and those most familiar with us will not be disappointed but joyfully commend us when referencing our name to others.  We also want to encourage those who express evidence of Your grace in their words and actions so they are affirmed in their God-given virtues or achievements. May our words and commendations be like apples of gold in settings of silver in Jesus' name we pray. Amen.

Father, we seek Your guidance today as the national election takes place here in the U.S. Much will be decided in local, state and national politics and we have a say in the matter for which we do not take for granted. We ask that it be an honest election marked with integrity. Whatever the outcome our eyes are on You, the Maker of Heaven and Earth. Amen.

Today's Suggested Music and Supplemental Resources

"Keep me true"   Listen on YouTube   Jabu Hlongwane, a South African musician. Although this probably has more the sense of being faithful it's a good song of aspiration.

Dr Dinse
This morning I had a dental appointment with Dr. Dinse, our long-time dentist. In considering Bible characters like Demetrius I am thankful for a competent, considerate and conscientious dentist. We first connected with Dr. Dinse when Wendy Gambini recommended him while working for him as office manager. Wendy's husband, Jim, was our first pastor when we moved to Lancaster County in 2001. Wendy went to be with the Lord last year and Jim remains a good friend.
