On
Tuesday
afternoon we
took a bike
ride on the
Capital Area
Greenbelt
trail along
the
Susquehanna
River
beginning at
Fort Hunter
north of
Harrisburg.
We
often pass by
the Rockport
railroad
bridge along a
highway but
this time saw
it up close.
It is the
longest stone
masonry arch
in the world
with 48 arches
and a length
of 3,820 feet,
built between
1900 and 1902
so it's almost
125 years old.
For most of
its life, the
bridge carried
four main
tracks
although there
are just two
in the present
time and at
times the
bridge will
have both a
west bound and
east bound
train on its
tracks.
It's
still heavily
used for rail
traffic as you
can see in the
photo above.
You have to
look carefully
at the bridge
photo to see
the train
crossing as
its symmetry
blends in with
the bridge
structure. It
has endured
many a storm,
including
devastating
Hurricane
Agnes in 1972.
Riding our
bikes right
underneath
where it
starts we
observed the
great extent
of stonework
there is. Critical
to its
longevity was
the
foundational
work when it
was
constructed.
Today
let us
consider the
firm
foundation
that the
people of
faith have in
God and His
Word. Our
daily
Scripture
portion calls
it a "solid
foundation".
This
foundation
stands firm
and always
will no matter
the shifting
of winds or
the
devastating
storms that
surface.
The prophet Isaiah twice used the image of a foundation to illustrate the great stability we have in God. He wrote, "He will be the sure foundation for your times" (Isaiah 33:6) and our Lord is "a precious cornerstone for a sure foundation; the one who trusts will never be dismayed" (Isaiah 28:16). Get a good grip on today's Scripture portion: "Nevertheless, God's solid foundation stands firm".
"Nevertheless"
is
significant.
The Greek word
mentoi is also
translated
yet, however
and but (see here).
In the
previous
verses Paul
had written
concerning
those who had
wandered from
the truth and
destroyed the
faith of some
(v.18). This
is still
happening
today, of
course, and
destroyers of
the faith
abound. One
commentator
writes, "The
conjunction
'nevertheless'
is one which
expresses
strong
contrast. Thus
the dismal
scenery of
man's
perversion (2
Timothy
2:16-18) is
now set in
contrast with
the majestic
reality of
God's
protection and
preservation."
"God's
solid
foundation
stands firm".
This
foundation
remains firm
and ever will.
Great classic
hymns express
this truth
such as "How
Firm a
Foundation",
"Christ is
Made the Sure
Foundation"
and "The
Church's One
Foundation",
all filled
with rich
doctrinal
teaching.
These hymns
have brought
comfort and
assurance to
believers for
generations.
But song
writers
continue to
use this theme
such as "Firm
Foundation (He
Won't)" we've
enjoyed the
last several
years. Much of
the doctrine
we learn
directly from
reading the
Bible is often
written on the
tablets of our
hearts
indirectly
from
memorizing
hymns and
worship songs
that teach
spiritual
truths in a
melodic
format.
All of us need to hide this Scriptural assurance deep within our hearts. Hide it deep so that you are not easily swayed when the assailing trials besiege you, when billboards or the public square declares God to be a fairy tale, when your own family turns against you shaking the very foundation of your faith. There will always be skeptics who attempt to confuse or belittle your stand for Christ. We don't know when other foundations in life will crumble, such as our health, marital bonds, a seemingly secure job position, the loss of a loved one, a troubled relationship, etc. Read the daily verse slowly several times and accept its truth deep within your spirit: "Nevertheless, God's solid foundation stands firm". It always has and always will and certainly does today. Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13 Stephen & Brooksyne Weber

with the
stress caused

Together for
the Gospel A view of the Rockville Bridge (I could not get this view due to foliage) Personal note: We returned last night from an overnight trip to Lewisburg, PA riding bike trails both Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons. On Tuesday we rode on the Capitol Area Greenbelt trail near Harrisburg. Today we share several photos from our Tuesday ride. ![]()
In
Harrisburg
there are six
bridges close
together. In
the foreground
is the Dock
Street dam,
a scene of
many deadly
drownings.
Seeing up
close how easy
it would be to
fall in we
understand
why! But most
accidents are
boaters.

The
Capitol Area
Greenbelt rail
runs right
along the
river in
Harrisburg
along Front
Street that
has many
mansions
including the
Governor's
Mansion. But
the mansion in
this photo was
built in 1926
for merchant
Mary Sachs. It
was going to
be torn down
until there
was an outcry.
It got the
attention of a
developer and
instead of
tearing it
down it is now
a Bed and
Breakfast.
