Witness sign
A Lancaster County witness sign we spotted on River Road south of Columbia, PA. Note also the resourceful use of the bungee cords in attaching the mailbox (presumably temporarily). It demonstrates authenticity in contentment!

"Godliness With Contentment"

Personal note: Tomorrow (Tuesday, August 13) I (Stephen) am scheduled for surgery. Although Brooksyne and I write and share these messages together I do all the technical work so we won't post another message until I have sufficiently recovered. See note below for more information.

Message summary: May God give us all a resolve to be content both in regard to our possessions or any situation we may providentially find ourselves in, thereby attaining great gain!

"But godliness with contentment is great gain" (1 Timothy 6:6).

Yesterday I taught from 1 Timothy 6:1-10 in our "Crossroads" Adult Bible Fellowship class. This portion has a number of themes but one of them is contentment so we will consider that today. In the context of money contentedness is being satisfied with what you have but there is also a sense of contentedness in regard to the conditions in which we find ourselves in life.

Contentment is a virtue that the majority of us have yet to consistently attain. Even when you have it you may find it easily slips away. Today's brief text is easily memorized, "Godliness with contentment is great gain".

Just prior to this section Paul addressed false teachers who supposed that godliness was a means of financial gain. I wonder who these teachers were in the context of that time period. In our own day there are those who sure seem to be "in it for the money" and for some "religion" has paid off handsomely.

Today's tiny verse is power-packed. Most view the experience of "gain" in life as having more money and possessions. But that is certainly not what the apostle Paul is writing about. Consider the power of the phrase, "But godliness with contentment is great gain". Paul is urging Timothy in the brief section that follows to consider genuine gain.

Godliness is a greatly needed virtue in our time. God will always have a remnant who walk in a manner that honors and pleases Him. Godliness indicates we will have a "God-ward attitude" of reverence and respect. We will do that which is pleasing to God so that it becomes a way of life for the godly person.

Earlier in this letter Paul wrote, "Discipline yourself for the purpose of godliness; for bodily discipline is only of little profit, but godliness is profitable for all things, since it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come" (1 Timothy 4:7,8). This expresses the infinitely greater value of godliness over that of financial or material gain. As a result of this godliness we have the inner peace of knowing that we are right with God and, whether we live or die, we belong to Him. This godliness is profitable for all things impacting us in both our present life and our future eternal life.

Paul is simply presenting the two choices Jesus spoke of in Matthew 6:24: "No one can serve two masters; for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and wealth". Notice there are only two options that our Lord gives; you cannot choose both. Money is what you make it—a master or a servant.

From the beginning Satan has tormented the human race with the deceptive lie, "That which God has provided is never enough". His lie to Adam and Eve was their first temptation with deadly consequences. Essentially, by tempting them to partake of the tree of life, he told them that the breathtaking beauty in the Garden was not enough; that human companionship was not enough; that God's provision was not enough; and that God's authority was meant to be questioned.

Today we have a growing allure toward more wealth and possessions which we've been told will make us happy. But contentment is not the fulfillment of what you want (which will always be changing), but the realization of how much you already have and finding satisfaction with that. It's realizing and acknowledging that, "All I have needed Thy hand hath provided."

Pastor Steve Coles of the Flagstaff Christian Fellowship (a church I visited years ago while in Arizona for a chaplain's conference) wrote,

"God has called His people to a life marked by contentment. Contentment comes from having the right priority--godliness, not gain; and the right perspective—the eternal, not the temporal. Jim Elliot, who was martyred at 28, wisely wrote in his journal when he was a 22-year-old college student, 'He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.' You can’t keep the things of this world; you can’t lose the promises of God regarding eternity. Order your life in line with that truth, and you will know God’s contentment."

May God give us all a resolve to be content, thereby attaining great gain!

Be encouraged today, Hebrews 3:13

Praying man Daily prayer: Father, when I get overly anxious about having the latest gadget or the newest fashion I usually overlook the fact that I have so much already at my disposal. So much, in fact, that I struggle to properly manage my possessions and can be overwhelmed with clutter. We thank you for those who model contentment by living with less so that others can have more; more of the basics of life and the provisions needed to reach others with the Gospel message. Contentment from You cannot be packaged and sold, but it can be a way of life as we align our priorities in accordance to Your will. Teach us the great gain we experience by setting our heart's affections not on this world's changing and peril-stricken economy, but by storing up treasures in heaven's economy where eternal riches never perish, spoil or fade. May that precious truth help us find contentment in a non-content society.  In the name of Jesus we pray. Amen.

Personal note: My surgery is to repair an abdominal hernia that is a result of an injury I sustained playing baseball some 60 years ago. I was playing at first base when a runner collided with me. (I am pretty sure he was out!) I awoke during the night and had a lump in the middle of my abdomen. I have had several surgeries to repair throughout life, the most recent in January of 2023 when mesh from a previous surgery was removed. The surgeon will be using a new method of placing mesh that he assured me should last the rest of my life. I am not sure whether he is predicting I will have a short remaining life span or a permanent repair!

Yesterday before I began teaching several of the men in the class offered a prayer for me. Being prayed for is always a blessing! (Ester took photo)

Today's Suggested Music and Supplemental Resources

"Godliness With Contentment"  Audio   Mike Book  Mike is a longtime friend, among the first we met after moving to Lancaster County in 2001. He wrote and sings this song based on our daily text.

"Crowns Down"  Watch on YouTube We were both blessed by this song that we sang in our church service yesterday.

In my teaching yesterday I referred to the following:

Nick, a friend of ours sent us a link to  this message which fits well in regard to a portion of the lesson I taught yesterday dealing with teaching truth from II Timothy 6:2bff: "Waking Up In A Woke World". Pastor Willy Rice of Calvary Church in Clearwater FL. Rice was one of the three speakers this week at the Central Manor Campmeeting here in Lancaster County. This outstanding message illustrates good teaching and boldly confronts the lies of this age. Video cued to beginning of message  This is a full sermon so see that you have time set aside. This man fires truth from both barrels!

Pastor Keefer preaching 8/21/16

This photo of John Keefer, a friend and retired pastor,  preached a similar type message years ago. We are seeing these points transpire before our very eyes.

The first two verses of 1 Timothy 6 which I taught on yesterday deals with slaves and masters. A pertinent application is applying to the employer/employee relationship. As the salt of Christianity permeated culture in time Christians realized the evil of slavery and men like William Wilberforce acted to ban it. This is a powerful scene from the movie "Amazing Grace" when the Slave Trade Acts of 1807 when slave trade was abolished. It's very powerful!  Video (Less than 3 minutes) This line especially moves me:

"When people speak of great men they think of men like Napoleon, men of violence, rarely do they think of peaceful men. But contrast the reception they will receive when they return home from their battles. Napoleon will arrive in pomp and in power, a man who has achieved the very summit of earthly ambition. Yet his dreams will be haunted by the oppressions of war. William Wilberforce however will return to his family laying his head on his pillow and remember, the slave trade is no more".

Watch this and consider the current chaosbeing reported out of postmodern Great Britain.

Here's another powerful scene of Wilberforce being encouraged by a very aged John Newton.

Also what an interesting perspective in the video: The Reality of Slavery in America vs Everywhere Else (5:50)

Finally, here's a heartening story. You can find glimmers of hope among the ashes of the Olympics.  Especially watch the embedded video: "Things we love to see".

Crossroads bike ride 8/10/24
Saturday morning we joined a group of friends from our Crossroads ABF class for a bike ride on the Warwick to Ephrata Rail Trail, one of Lancaster County's many outstanding local trails.

Falcon with friend on bike ride 8/10/24
Our maltipoo Falcon, who generally rides well, joined us and made a pet friend although we wonder if he's jealous about not having his own sunglasses!

Warwick to Ephrata rail trail
It's a beautiful trail through both wooded areas and along farmland. One of our riders lost his phone on the ride but someone picked it up and turned it in to the police who called the phone's owner.

Keller's Mill Covered Bridge
There are some beautiful areas off the trail so we did a little exploring on the way back. This is the Keller's Mill Covered Bridge. Here's the area on Google map

Horse with colt
Yesterday after our church service we went over to visit the Lapp family on the Old Windmill Farm and met the new colt born last month that Brooksyne named Snickers. The family chose to keep the name which Brooksyne was pretty excited about!

Tesla on Old Windmill Farm
A guest with a Tesla truck visited the Old Windmill Farm! In this photo two very different modes of transportation, to say the least!
